With all the talk about Uber lately, the city seems to have overlooked the fact that there may be some issues with our licensed cab companies. In a surprise announcement, Guelph Police has declared that they’ve revoked the license for Guelph Taxi, an upstart outfit that started running cabs in Guelph in 2013. A Guelph Mercury article in August started highlighting concerns about the operation of Guelph Taxi, which has now culminated in them being effectively out of business in the Royal City. When Uber arrived in town this past July, whether intentional or unintentional, they debuted in a regulatory sweet spot; the Guelph Police Service, who is in charge of overseeing taxis and taxi licensing in Guelph, has no Police Board meeting in August. But it’s back to work now for the board, and the main topic of conversation at the meeting Thursday was Uber, and one Royal City taxi company went on the record to say it is not a fan. Recent deaths in the Toronto area have raised new warnings about the use, or rather misuse, of the painkiller Fentanyl. Forty times for portent than heroin, there have been 655 deaths attributed to Fentanyl alone from 2009 to 2014, and in the last week alone there was a high profile theft of patches in Toronto, two high-profile arrests in Halton Region, and 16 overdoses in a single day in Vancouver. In the shadow of that recent news, and a bulletin from the Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse, the Guelph Police Service has issued their own warning. In a curious release a couple of weeks ago, the Guelph Police Service reminded local drivers that Victoria Road is not, in contrast to how they were treating it, a “speedway.” In a 24-hour period, the police had stopped six vehicles along Victoria Road for speeding, including one driver who was doing 102 kilometers per hour. For the record, the speed limit on that portion of Victoria Road was 50 kilometers per hour. As a 31-year-old Guelph man faces charges for drive motor vehicle-perform stunt-speeding by 50 or more km/hr and speeding under the Highway Traffic Act, a very public act of road rage should be making us all think about how much nonsense some drivers are getting away with on the roadways of the country.
