Although many members of the City of Guelph workforce have found themselves laid off as a result of the pandemic, when the members of three public unions return to work they will at least be doing so with a new agreement. In the rush of new information daily about the City of Guelph response to COVID-19, one of the threads that’s gotten lost is the ongoing negotiations between the City, and three of their public workers’ unions to secure a new contract. Over 70 people joined local labour organizers to mark the death last month of a 62-year-old security guard at Guelph Central Station. After leaving a wreath and tying green ribbons outside the station in memorial to Mario Ruffolo, City of Guelph labour leaders told the crowd that Ruffolo’s death is a reminder that more needs to be done for workers, and that more needs to be done for people suffering from mental illness. Monday night, city council ratified the new contract between the City of Guelph and three Canadian Union of Public Employees locals that was reached on April 3. The motion was passed unanimously with all councillors and the mayor voting in favour, but they know what’s in the deal. We, among the general public, still do not. A quick but ominous press release was fired off from City Hall late today saying that the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) locals 241, 973 and 1946 have requested a “no board” report be filed with the Ontario Labour Relations Board. It means that the parties involved are basically not close to making a deal, but more ominously, it starts a three week countdown to potential job action.
