Halloween Warnings for Big Kids and Small Ones

Going into the Halloween weekend, the Guelph Police Service is warning kids of all ages to play it safe out there.

As a reminder, the GPS are letting you know that for this Halloween weekend (where Halloween actually falls on a Saturday), the rules of Safe Semester are back in effect for downtown revellers.

The Guelph Police Service, University of Guelph and the City of Guelph are using several strategies in the hopes of reducing alcohol-related offences, noise complaints, littering, public urination and other nuisances during the Halloween weekend.

  • Increased University of Guelph communication with students, including neighbourhood visits, to provide information about neighbourhood responsibilities, laws, and regulations
  • Increased Police and Bylaw presence in the downtown and in neighbourhoods where previous issues have occurred
  • Increased enforcement of the Ontario Liquor License Act and Provincial laws and regulations
  • Increased waste containers in targeted areas

On Friday and Saturday between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m.:

  • Macdonell Street will be closed to traffic from the Macdonell parking lot to about six parking spaces west of the West Parkade.
  • Wyndham Street will be closed to traffic between Carden Street and Cork Street.
  • One accessible portable washroom will be placed at Guelph Central Station.
  • One taxi stand will be located on the north side of Carden Street across from Guelph Central Station.
  • All parking lots will remain open and accessible.

Cars parked on the closed sections of Macdonell Street and Wyndham Street after 10 p.m. will be towed and impounded at the owner’s expense.

For information about the project, visit the City of Guelph website.

To report illegal activity in any neighbourhood, at any time of day, residents are asked to call Guelph Police Service at 519-824-1212.

For the little kids enjoying some Trick or Treating, the police have some important reminders for them, their parents, and homeowners that can be found at their website here.
