With CUPE and the Ministry of Education working towards a showdown on Monday as educations workers go back on the picket line, schools around Ontario are having to make alternative plans. Next week, schools in Guelph and area under the two English school boards are taking a similar approach to keep in-person going as long as possible in the hopes that cooler heads might still prevail. Last night, the new Guelph city council gathered around the horseshoe and took their oath of offices, pledging to King Charles III that they will be the best council possible and make smart decisions. The last Heritage Guelph meeting for this term of council offered a sneak preview of the challenges facing the next council. With Bill 23 creating some pretty stark changes for how heritage properties are preserved and protected in the future, planning staff offered a way forward in the short-term. Coming off a municipal election that was, in many way, about affordability, comes a reminder of the stakes when it comes to what “affordability” really means. At the start of Living Wage Week 2022, the Ontario Living Wage Network has announced, perhaps unsurprisingly, that the living wage in Ontario has gone up once again.
