This Week at Council: More Debate on Public Space, Plus Road Safety

There was a lot going on at this meeting, and some of it had nothing to do with what was on the agenda. For instance, one city councillor was absent because they’re now busy chasing a new gig at a different level of government.  In terms of stuff at the meeting, there was a new development around the Public Space Use Bylaw, which caused some controversy despite how little about it was available in the agenda. Hopefully this recap has more detail! Continue reading “This Week at Council: More Debate on Public Space, Plus Road Safety”

City Council Preview – What’s on the Agenda for the March 25, 2025 Meeting?

The last meeting for March is a recital of the past. Yes, as usual, we will revisit the (almost whole) agenda from this month’s Committee of the Whole meeting, but there’s also new/old controversy with a returning bylaw that caused a lot of hand wringing last year. The ball will be in the people’s court (so to speak) to see if they have anything new and interesting to say on these matters, otherwise this could be a short meeting. Committee of the Whole Preview – What’s on the Agenda for the March 4, 2025 Meeting?

The first couple of Committee of the Whole meeting this year have been pretty dry, but this March meeting is very stacked by comparison! First, there will be long awaited final report on changes to advisory committee of councils, and along with that there will be the mid-term review of governance at city council. And if that’s not enough, we’ll talk about water, traffic, and how we can get by better without single-use plastics! RECAP: Accessibility Committee Wants Changes to Mobility and Taxi Programs

In a remarkable turn of events, the Accessibility Advisory Committee finished work early in their first meeting of 2025! They still got a lot of work done though. They were consulted about heritage downtown and they had some comments about on-street accessible parking during the patio season, but the meat of the meeting was in the way the City of Guelph currently asks people with disabilities to apply for needed mobility services. Let’s recap! Continue reading “RECAP: Accessibility Committee Wants Changes to Mobility and Taxi Programs”

MEETING PREVIEW: Accessibility Advisory Committee for December 17, 2024

The last meeting of the year goes to the Accessibility Advisory Committee. For this one you should expect a lot of wrap up for the work of 2024 and some teeing up for the work of 2025, but the main point of interest might be seeing what happens in this first meeting after a fairly fractious October meeting where members of the AAC laid down the law, and their concerns, about their own autonomy. So let’s check out what’s on the agenda… Continue reading “MEETING PREVIEW: Accessibility Advisory Committee for December 17, 2024”

This Week at Council: Strategic Plan Updated Further, and So Was Transit!

April ended with a very busy trifecta of meetings including a very heavy focus on transit matters. Before that though, council had another workshop to discuss the update to the Strategic Plan for the last time before a finished draft comes back in a few months. As for transit, council made some updates and heard all about those future plans, and other matters of transportation, at a separate workshop.
