This month’s planning meeting was probably always going to be a controversial affair, but, as it turned out, making a decision about a 23-storey tower at the corner of Wyndham and Wellington is something council didn’t have to worry about… for now. Instead, council had to find a new source of friction and boy was it delivered thanks to a staff report about the Ontario government’s decision on the latest Official Amendment. This month’s planning meeting, again delayed a week because of a special occasion, will be a pretty big one. It’s not because of the heritage designation or the request for a sign bylaw variance, but because after four years of work the Comprehensive Zoning Bylaw is finally ready for approval. It’s been nearly 30 years since this piece of regulation has been formally updated, and this month, we have arrived at the end. This month’s Heritage Guelph meeting gained some forward momentum on the heritage planning work plan in the City’s 1,700 designation eligible properties now paired down to an opening line-up of 10 for staff to start with. In other news, the committee sent the heritage designation for 65 Delhi Street to council while also looking at a designation for the Albion, which, during the meeting, was given an all-new nickname it’s apparently had all this time.
