Guelph Police Board Hears About Uber

When Uber arrived in town this past July, whether intentional or unintentional, they debuted in a regulatory sweet spot; the Guelph Police Service, who is in charge of overseeing taxis and taxi licensing in Guelph, has no Police Board meeting in August. But it’s back to work now for the board, and the main topic of conversation at the meeting Thursday was Uber, and one Royal City taxi company went on the record to say it is not a fan. City Wants Your Two Cents About the Budget

After the truncated effort to pass a budget earlier this year, the City of Guelph, its staff, and political leaders are going to try something new for the 2016 Budget, a massive new effort to try and gather as much community consultation as possible before city council votes for the final budget in December.

Whatever They Were, the Site with the Drums is Clean Says City

The incredible case of mysterious drums buried near the intersection of Wellington St. and the Hanlon Expressway has been a local curiosity since the first drum was dug up last fall. But whatever they are, and wherever they came from, the City of Guelph is saying that the site is officially clean, even if they still aren’t revealing – or are just unsure – what or why they were buried in the first place. More Food Trucks in Guelph? Have Your Say

Interested in having more variety in terms of mobile food options? Well, the City of Guelph wants you’re feedback in regards to food trucks, and the by-laws that allow or prevent their entry in the Guelph food scene. There’s a vexing lack of food trucks in the city, but in many cities there’s a tension between that side of the business and more traditional restaurants, and it would be safe to say that Guelph is no exception. So is the city opening a can of worms with this debate? Perhaps, but regardless, the city is looking for feedback on the issue. Continue reading “More Food Trucks in Guelph? Have Your Say”

PRESS RELEASE – Niska Bridge to be Closed till May 1

The Bailey Bridge over the Speed River on Niska Road is a bit of a local legend, and in case you don’t know it, that history is outlined here. For a “temporary bridge” it’s held up remarkably well for the last four decades, but the growing Guelph and more wear and tear from the increased traffic is starting to take its toll. A regular inspection lead to the discovery that there maybe some bigger issues, so while the City closes the bridge for repairs starting today, they’ll be taking the opportunity to determine a more permanent solution. PRESS RELEASE – City Wants Feedback for New Equipment in 4 Parks

Do you like parks? Do you like playgrounds? Who doesn’t? And I know you kids who read this blog do. So the City of Guelph is looking for feedback concerning a new playground equipment being installed in four local parks. I don’t have any kids, so I really have no skin in the game, but what I will say is that if it were me offering my input, I would lean more towards the sandlots and metal bars of my own playground days. Hey, it may not have been as safe, and I knocked out my two front teeth on a see-saw when I was five, but I survived. (Maybe that’s why I shouldn’t have a say…) Continue reading “PRESS RELEASE – City Wants Feedback for New Equipment in 4 Parks”

Guelph Citizen Digs Into Campaign Expenses

Doing their due diligence on the money front from last fall’s Municipal Election, Andy Best at the Guelph Citizen posted a breakdown of how much the current members of council spent in order to win their seats. For council candidates, the spending limit is between $16 to $18,000 depending on the ward they’re running in, while there’s a $82,000 limit for mayor. For the most part, the candidates didn’t get near their spending limits, but the numbers, as pointed out by the Citizen, do show some interesting trends. PRESS RELEASE – Immigration Connection Celebrates Fifth Year

Guelph Wellington Local Immigration Partnership will once again be hosting its annual Immigration Connection event a week from today at the Hanlon Convention Centre. Amongst the questions you will have is where is the Hanlon Convention Centre, because not a week goes by that someone doesn’t stop at the front desk of the hotel I work at wondering where it is. (It’s in the plaza at the corner of Woodlawn and the Hanlon. The same one as the Good Will, around the corner where the Three Star Cinema used to be.) And that’s the one piece of information you won’t get from the press release below. Continue reading “PRESS RELEASE – Immigration Connection Celebrates Fifth Year”
