For the second time in the COVID-era, a pair of Guelph City Councillors held a virtual town hall via Zoom. Ward 5 Councillors Leanne Caron and Cathy Downer organized a gathering of around 30 people Thursday night to cover matters of law and order with members of the Guelph Police Service, and matters of the Guelph Public Library with the CEO and Board members. In what might be described as a delegation in advance of next week’s two meetings about the Baker District Development, some 500 people signed up to take part in a virtual open house on the proposed new main library. The presentation was the first chance that the public had to see what the library might look like in its proposed new home in its own separate building at the south end of the Baker District site. Guelph has finally got a good look at the alternative plans for the new main library project, at least in a cursory way. The agenda for the council meeting on October 7 has been released, but a lot of work has been done on planing for the new main library beyond just figuring out how much it will cost. After months of speculation and concern about the fate of the new main branch of the Guelph Public Library, the City of Guelph has announced that they’ve updated the plan which will hopefully allow for a more cost-effective version of the project to proceed.
