GUELPH POLITICAST #450 – The Year at Council (September – December)

Last year was very busy for Guelph City Council, and the last four months of the year were perhaps the busiest. In fact, the business of council has gotten so busy to properly cover it all this “Year in Review” podcast now has to be done in three parts, splitting the year into three near equal sections for over two hours of combined content. So now, at the end, the final part of this trilogy. Continue reading “GUELPH POLITICAST #450 – The Year at Council (September – December)”

MEETING PREVIEW: Heritage Guelph Meeting for January 13, 2025

Heritage Guelph gets back to work promising a busy 2025 after what was definitely a very busy 2024! No major heritage designations this week, or any complicated fights about demolitions at this meeting (we think). There will be a kind of demolition discussion at this month’s meeting though, and there will be some discussion about the workload ahead, and then we will head downtown for another big project! Continue reading “MEETING PREVIEW: Heritage Guelph Meeting for January 13, 2025”

GUELPH POLITICAST #446 – The Good Old Guelph (feat. Stephen Robinson & Jack Mallon)

There has been a lot of heritage news this year, and especially in the last couple of weeks. This should not be surprising because heritage staff in all municipalities have been in a mad scramble these last few years to designate as much heritage as possible before the end of this year due to Bill 23. That changed back in the spring, so it’s probably a good time now to catch our breathe and look at the work done so far, and all the work that is to come. RECAP: Heritage Guelph Wants to See Terms Before Council Approval

The November meeting of Heritage Guelph was split between process and designations. Guess which side had the more controversy?! At issue was an update to the changes to the Advisory Committees of Council, and though staff weren’t proposing many changes for Heritage Guelph, there were some members of the committee that wanted to cross all the T’s and dot all the I’s before council grants their approval. How did this all shake out? Read the recap below… Continue reading “RECAP: Heritage Guelph Wants to See Terms Before Council Approval”

MEETING PREVIEW: Heritage Guelph Meeting for November 4, 2024

It’s going to be a busy slate for the Heritage Guelph meeting this November with changes, plans, designations, and maybe even a hint of conflict (?). Yes, there are new designations and future designations to consider, as usual, but there’s also the year-long plan to designate as many properties as possible and that massive designation project, the Heritage Conservation District study of the OR Lands. RECAP: Heritage Guelph Still Has Issues with Wall Repairs

It was a pretty straightforward meeting of Heritage Guelph this October, and it even had an obligatory stop at the cemetery. The most controversial item on the agenda, even mildly, was planned repairs to the retaining wall along the river at The Boathouse, which is one of those instances where legal requirements trump heritage ones. But that’s not the last word on this meeting, so to see what you missed, check out this recap! Continue reading “RECAP: Heritage Guelph Still Has Issues with Wall Repairs”

MEETING PREVIEW: Heritage Guelph Meeting for October 7, 2024

Heritage Guelph’s October meeting will be light on new designations, but still full of heritage preservation issues. From the wall along with the river near the Boathouse to a new multiuse trail that will go through Guelph’s most famous cemetery, and from a well known set of row houses in the north end to a very different house style in the south end, there’s a lot on the agenda to satisfy your divergent heritage tastes. This Week at Council: In the Heights Downtown

The first planning meeting of fall brought an interesting proposal for the downtown core, are we ready for some more height?  A new tower promising 14-storeys, over 120 units and new retail space at the heart of the core was discussed at council this week while other matters also got an airing albeit more briefly than that proposed tower, including a controversial bylaw now bound for final implementation. Let’s recap! Continue reading “This Week at Council: In the Heights Downtown”
