If it’s June, then that means it’s time for Guelph City Council to sit as a shareholder. The City of Guelph is the sole shareholder of two different businesses, one is Guelph Municipal Holdings Inc, which holds our stake in Alectra Utilities, and the other is Guelph Junction Railway, which owns much of the train track that runs through the Royal City. This Week at Council: Planning and Shareholding in Four Parts

This was a busy week at city council and it was four meetings long. There was the usual planning meeting, which went by in a way that was largely free of controversy. Less than 24 hours later, council got together again for a triple header, first to receive the audited financial statements from the last fiscal year, and then back-to-back shareholder meetings about energy and trains respectively. Its a rare triple-header at the council chambers, and another special Wednesday night meeting. So what’s going on? This Week at Council: Parking Master Plan and Short-Term Rental Licences Approved

City Council Preview – What’s on the Agenda for the March 28 Meeting?

This regular meeting of council will hold no real surprises (except, perhaps, the start time). Council will ratify the Committee of the Whole agenda, and there may be some attempted adjustments made there on a couple of items, and there’s a surprise additional topic to be considered as part of the consent agenda. This Month at Council: Tech Trouble, Bridge Debate, Water Plan Updates

If nothing else this month, Guelph is now officially a bird city, and we now sleep under the wings of our official bird, the Black-capped Chickadee, which was chosen by popular demand. At least that part went right because this month council had its first serious tech-glitch of these post-pandemic times. GMHI Sells the Last Assets of District Energy to Toronto Green Tech Firm

A long cause of corporate consternation at Guelph City Hall was official resolved on Monday when the shareholder of Guelph Municipal Holdings Inc., aka city council, passed a motion to sell the downtown node of District Energy to Toronto-based Cascara Energy. The move is being considered a victory for corporate oversight and stewardship, while also being held up as an example of the City’s commitment to get to net-zero emissions.
