Two Heritage Guelph meetings in the same month?! This might be Christmas for all the history nerds out there, but this second meeting of the month comes with a couple of very specific purposes. On the one hand, there’s a demolition to talk about in the city’s current heritage district, and on the other there’s going to be some initial goal setting to talk about for the city’s newest heritage district. Let’s get into the specifics… Continue reading “MEETING PREVIEW: Heritage Guelph Meeting for September 18, 2023”

“We Love All of You, We Hear You, And We’re Here for You.” Guelph Gathers Again to End the Stigma
“My name is Nicolas. I’m an addict. I’ve done fentanyl, I’ve done meth, I’ve done every drug out there, but I am not a bad person.” If there was an overarching sentiment on the sixth annual Drug Poisoning Awareness Day (formally Overdose Awareness Day), it was that. Several community members took part and offered words of remembrance, words of caring, and words of desire that we further advance the cause of ending overdose deaths. RECAP: Town Hall Gives City Feedback on Downtown Parking Plan
In progress is the Downtown Guelph Parking Master Plan, which will guide how much, what kind, and the various costs of parking downtown in the next 10 years. The consultants engaged to develop the plan held a virtual meeting on Wednesday night to show the work they’ve done so far and get feedback on the work they have left to do before it’s presented to Committee of the Whole in September. Downtown Town Hall Shares Good News, Shows Divisions
A town hall meeting for downtown businesses and building owners at Guelph City Hall on Monday was meant to highlight a rapid pace of change in the city’s centre since the new board of the Downtown Guelph Business Association took over last December. While that was informative, the members themselves still had a lot of concerns, from safety to the current status of the organization itself, and sometimes it got testy. This Week at Council: Police Money and Paramedic Needs
This week, there back-to-back council meetings, and one of them looked bigger than normal in terms of the number of people around the horseshoe, which was really more like a round table. A joint meeting of Guelph City Council and Wellington County Council was held to talk about the issues facing paramedics, while Guelph council on it’s own had to deal with a matter of funding more police downtown. City Council Preview – What’s on the Agenda for the Meeting on May 31?
To end the month of May, literally, the regular council meeting looks to be relatively laid back with a simple review of decisions already made at Committee of the Whole, a decision to make about a new appointment to a local board, and then ratifying a mid-year budget decision made at the Guelph Police Services Board. The only real question is whether there will be any real controversy at all? Continue reading “City Council Preview – What’s on the Agenda for the Meeting on May 31?”

RECAP: Police Board Talks About Police Assaults and Future Staffing Needs

MEETING PREVIEW: Guelph Police Services Board for April 20, 2023
Is it oddly ironic that the Guelph Police Services Board is meeting on 4/20? It’s a quirk of the calendar, but there’s no smoke in this agenda as the Police Board will tackle some fairly ordinary items like financial and human resources matters. There will also be a presentation about police assaults, the quarterly professional standards report and Chief Gord Cobey’s monthly report.
