City Council Preview – What’s on the Agenda for the Meeting on May 31?

To end the month of May, literally, the regular council meeting looks to be relatively laid back with a simple review of decisions already made at Committee of the Whole, a decision to make about a new appointment to a local board, and then ratifying a mid-year budget decision made at the Guelph Police Services Board. The only real question is whether there will be any real controversy at all?

NOTE #1: Delegates will be able to appear at this meeting in-person or via tele-presense but you do have to register with the clerks office before 10 am on Friday May 26. You can also submit written delegations and correspondences for agenda items.

NOTE #2: In addition to meeting in-person, this meeting will also be live-streamed on the City of Guelph’s website here.

NOTE #3: This meeting is on Wednesday as opposed to the usual Tuesday slot.

CLOSED MEETING:

June 2023 Public Appointments to the Guelph Police Services Board – The appointment will need to approved in open session, but it has to be discussed in closed first under Section 239(2) (b) of the Municipal Act relating to “personal matters about an identifiable individual, including municipal or local board employees.”

Guelph Police Service Downtown Initiative – In April, the Guelph Police Service increased patrols downtown by adding two additional officers to supplement the one Downtown Community Resource Officer. To cover the cost, the service needs $260,000 and the Police Services Board passed a recommendation to take that from the Police Operating Contingency Reserve. The hitch is that city council needs to approve that too, and given the recent report that the additional officers have been received warmly downtown it’s likely that council will approve it.
