Although there’s been a couple of meetings in the last few weeks, the fall session began properly this week with the first of two Committee of the Whole meetings this month. There were really only two things on the agenda, one a matter of diversity and inclusion and the other a matter of major infrastructure renewal. The first planning meeting of the fall will have something for everyone, a new project that’s bound to be controversial, a decision on a project that was sort of controversial a few months ago, a new heritage designation, and some pruning to the City of Guelph’s new Comprehensive Zoning Bylaw. Committee of the Whole is back to start the last third of the year with a jam-packed agenda. September may be “Back to School” time, but at city council it’s back to Downtown Renewal time with a five-pack of reports covering all manner of issues in the core including waste collection, washrooms, and heritage. Also, there will be lots of recognition for staff, and some formal recognition for our Indigenous community. This month’s Guelph Police Services Board starting with some tech issues. Maybe everyone was just rusty after taking last month off… Anyway, there was a lot of ground to cover with this agenda including an update about the impact of increased staff downtown, some notes about public safety in police pursuits, and a new video to promote the service just in time for Police Week. Been a while since we’ve had a workshop… So what’s the focus of this one? The future! More specifically though the future of downtown. Guelph’s main drag in the core will be getting some work done in the next decade, and if we’re working on all the stuff under the road, we can take the time to work on some stuff on top of the road, you know, give Wyndham Street a face lift. Council business wrapped up for the month of February with a meeting that covered a variety of topics, and included some special guests. A follow-up delegation about transit in St. George’s Square led to a robust conversation about the subject from a variety of points of view, and then council made some appointments, and talked about pretty big re-organization for a major committee that will have more direct City involvement now. One of the problems covering issues of homelessness in the media is that it’s hard to find people to be the face of those issues. You see this in just about every news story, “person X is experiencing issue A”; it’s a way of personalizing the issue and making it relatable to the audience, and it’s one of the reasons why the homelessness crisis is so unrelatable.
