City council wrapped up this week as the traditional summer break began, and it wound to a close without a distinctive voice… But at least until you’ll be able to hear it on this week’s podcast. Continue reading “GUELPH POLITICAST #89 – Dr. Hugh Whiteley, “Emeritus Council Delegate””

GUELPH POLITICAST #88 – Steve Kraft, CEO of Guelph Public Library
A lot of people probably remember a row between then-Toronto Councillor Doug Ford and vaunted Canadian author Margaret Atwood over supporting libraries, and not closing branches in order to save the City money. Well, six years later Ford is out of council and Atwood is more popular than every because of The Handmaid’s Tale TV series. You know what else is more popular than ever? Continue reading “GUELPH POLITICAST #88 – Steve Kraft, CEO of Guelph Public Library”
GUELPH POLITICAST #87 – Holly Mastrogiacomo, Guelph’s #TamponTuesday
When you think about the essentials, the things that you need on a daily basis, what do you think about? Food, shelter, and clothing are obviously the big three, and once you’ve got those maybe you start thinking about other essentials: a tooth brush, toilet paper, and if you’re of the female persuasion, you’re probably also thinking about tampons… Continue reading “GUELPH POLITICAST #87 – Holly Mastrogiacomo, Guelph’s #TamponTuesday”
GUELPH POLITICAST #86 – C.J. Smith, This Crazy Train
Surely, you’ve gotten on a train or a bus and been aghast at the bad behaviour of some of the people you were riding with: muddy feet on the seats, somebody crowding the entrance or exit, using empty seats as bag racks… People can be rude, but that doesn’t mean you have to put up with it, right? That’s what C.J. Smith thought in 2010 when she started “This Crazy Train”. Continue reading “GUELPH POLITICAST #86 – C.J. Smith, This Crazy Train”
GUELPH POLITICAST #85 – Celebrating Celebrations of Guelph
This week’s Guelph Politicast kind of shakes up the format. Typically these are interviews with people, or clips of speeches either partial or whole, but on this pod I wanted to tell you a story, and that story is a tale of Guelph as we start the countdown to the Royal City’s 200th birthday in just 10 years time. Continue reading “GUELPH POLITICAST #85 – Celebrating Celebrations of Guelph”
GUELPH POLITICAST #84 – Heather Flaherty, GM of Parks & Recreation
June is Parks and Recreation month in Ontario, and Guelph is marking the occasion with a variety of activities at its various open spaces and indoor facilities. For the last year though, the City has been one rec facility short though, but not for too much longer. Continue reading “GUELPH POLITICAST #84 – Heather Flaherty, GM of Parks & Recreation”
GUELPH POLITICAST #83 – Live (ish) From National Aboriginal Day
Guelph marked another National Aboriginal Day on Wednesday bringing First Nations dance, music, culture and food to Downtown Guelph in front of City Hall for all to see. A few hundred people gathered on Carden Street to see a wide swath of Indigenous traditions brought to life, a reminder that as we strive for truth and reconciliation, there’s still a culture trying to thrive. Continue reading “GUELPH POLITICAST #83 – Live (ish) From National Aboriginal Day”
GUELPH POLITICAST #82 – Linda Terry, Social Planning Council of Cambridge and North Dumfries
“If a free society cannot help the many who are poor, it cannot save the few who are rich.” John F. Kennedy said that, and it seems a fitting reminder that our tremendous financial inequality in modern society is far from sustainable. Someone said a long time ago that you will always have the poor among you, but that doesn’t mean that we have to prove him right. Though as he sit here in the year 2017, the poor is still among us, and we seem no closer to a solution. Continue reading “GUELPH POLITICAST #82 – Linda Terry, Social Planning Council of Cambridge and North Dumfries”
GUELPH POLITICAST #81 – Kristina Virro, Nutritionist and Psychotherapist-in-Training
You may recall the this past school year was marked with a particular sadness on the University of Guelph campus. Several students took their own lives over the course of the fall and winter semesters, leaving a campus community in mourning and searching for answers. How could so many, feel so lost and alone, and see no other alternative for themselves but to take their own lives? Continue reading “GUELPH POLITICAST #81 – Kristina Virro, Nutritionist and Psychotherapist-in-Training”
GUELPH POLITICAST #80 – Danna Evans, General Manager of Culture, Tourism & Community Investment
Is Guelph a tourism destination? That’s debatable. Certainly many Guelphites would argue that there are reasons that people who don’t live in Guelph should visit Guelph. Great festivals, a cool downtown, a big church you can see from everywhere… the Royal City is where it’s at, and this week, I talk to the person in charge of making sure you know all about it. Continue reading “GUELPH POLITICAST #80 – Danna Evans, General Manager of Culture, Tourism & Community Investment”
