This was a busy week at city council and it was four meetings long. There was the usual planning meeting, which went by in a way that was largely free of controversy. Less than 24 hours later, council got together again for a triple header, first to receive the audited financial statements from the last fiscal year, and then back-to-back shareholder meetings about energy and trains respectively. MEETING PREVIEW: Committee of Adjustment Meeting for June 22, 2023
Two Committee of Adjustment meetings in the same month?! What did we do to deserve such a treat? Well, despite the very full agenda at the June 8 meeting, the perhaps most controversial item of the month has been reserved to this standalone meeting, which will determine the short-term fate of the Days Inn property. Will it continue to be a hotel, or will it be something else? Continue reading “MEETING PREVIEW: Committee of Adjustment Meeting for June 22, 2023”
RECAP: Marathon Committee of Adjustment Meetings Struggles With Small Bar’s Small Patio
This first Committee of Adjustment meeting for June was, itself, about the length of two regular meetings. That’s what happens when you have a full agenda with 10 different applications, and it includes one where it seems like the entire neighbourhood wants to have their say. All eyes were on the the proposed patio for Guelph’s smallest bar, but that was not the only matter that had eyes on it, so let’s recaps this well adjusted meeting! City Council Preview – What’s on the Agenda for the June 13 Meeting?
This month’s planning meeting of city council isn’t offering anything new, but it is offering something old and something really old. MEETING PREVIEW: Committee of Adjustment Meeting for June 8, 2023
It’s another long list of variances being asked for at the first of two Committee of Adjustment meetings this month. New additions, new buildings, new uses, and a pretty vast new manufacturing facility are all on the agenda, as the committee must decide what minor requests are minor enough to get their approval. Let’s see what’s on the agenda. Continue reading “MEETING PREVIEW: Committee of Adjustment Meeting for June 8, 2023”
This Week at Council: Official Plan Decision Debate Takes Over Planning Meeting
This month’s planning meeting was probably always going to be a controversial affair, but, as it turned out, making a decision about a 23-storey tower at the corner of Wyndham and Wellington is something council didn’t have to worry about… for now. Instead, council had to find a new source of friction and boy was it delivered thanks to a staff report about the Ontario government’s decision on the latest Official Amendment. RECAP: Committee of Adjustment Hands Out Minor Variances and Talks Bylaw
As compared to April’s marathon Committee of Adjustment meeting, the May meeting was a breeze. There were just four applications on the agenda, but there wasn’t a lot to fight about, and after that, staff gave a presentation about recent changes to two big committee-adjacent matters: the Ontario government’s decision about the latest Official Plan update, and the newly approved Comprehensive Zoning Bylaw. MEETING PREVIEW: Committee of Adjustment Meeting for May 11, 2023
This month’s Committee of Adjustment meeting will hopefully not be the marathon that April’s was; there are significantly fewer than a dozen different applications to dispatch. The committee will hear a couple of applications that will look at some building expansions, and then they will hear from staff about the approved changes to the Comprehensive Zoning Bylaw and the Provincially approved changes to the Official Plan.
