City Council Preview – What’s on the Agenda for the June 11 Meeting?

This planning meeting of Guelph City Council will focus for the most part on heritage matters. For the last several months, Heritage Guelph has been banking new designations for council to finally sign off on and the horseshoe will take a look at five of them. But that’s not the end of the agenda, there will also be a request to extend a deadline, a request to send a letter, and a request to build some new student accommodations. MEETING PREVIEW: Heritage Guelph Meeting for June 3, 2024

There are no new delegations on the agenda for this month’s Heritage Guelph meeting, but there’s a lot of background work to do. There’s a new member of the committee to get orientated, there’s a matter of a wall along the river, there’s a permit application to move a heritage building, and there’s a new cultural heritage value report to set the stage for a future designation. This is what’s on the agenda for June…

This Week at Council: Money Talks, Tiny Homes Walk… to the County

This week at city council, two was the magic number. There were two different meetings, we had the month’s second Committee of the Whole meeting, there were two heritage-related motions, and there were two major presents. Two was also reflective of the impact, because there are two different local governments and different powers between then, and that made the idea of proceeding with our own Better Tent City (see above) more difficult. Here’s the recap… Continue reading “This Week at Council: Money Talks, Tiny Homes Walk… to the County”

RECAP: Heritage Guelph Says ‘No’ to Kidd Barn Demo

It was a busy agenda with about half-a-dozen items, but that doesn’t mean that Heritage Guelph didn’t handle it all industriously. A handful of new designations are now on their way to council to get their seal of approval, but it was a past designation that will likely make the news. Ahead of next week’s council meeting on the very same subject, the heritage committee had their say about holding up a heritage property that the owner doesn’t seem to want to protect. Let’s recap…

City Council Preview – What’s on the Agenda for the May 14 Meeting?

This month’s planning meeting is all about heritage, or rather it’s all about getting rid of heritage. One of the two applications at least has the endorsement of staff, but if you’re concerned about the fate of an historic farmhouse and its accompanying barn in the south end, you might want to perk up because being told that they have to live with protecting that heritage on their land is not sitting well with the property owner. MEETING PREVIEW: Heritage Guelph Meeting for May 6, 2024

There’s going to be a busy slate at this month’s Heritage Guelph meeting as the local heritage protection committee’s got a lot of extra protection to do. First up, they will asked again to put themselves between history and the wrecking ball as a property already under protection is threatened yet again. But other matters this month are less urgent or dire as the committee adds three more properties to the formal list of designated properties. RECAP: Heritage Guelph Gets Ready for Designation Dump on Council

There were April showers at this month’s Heritage Guelph meeting, and it was showering perspective designations to city council in the near future. Staff laid out their future plans in this meeting, some key deadlines for ongoing projects, and then looked at some more perspective designations, which will be among the ones that will come to city council in the next couple of months. For now, let’s talk about the April meeting in the recap below… Continue reading “RECAP: Heritage Guelph Gets Ready for Designation Dump on Council”

MEETING PREVIEW: Heritage Guelph Meeting for April 8, 2024

This month’s Heritage Guelph meeting will be a trivia bonanza! How many (locally) famous hands held the deed for a particular house Queen Street? How many original features exist on a well-known downtown building that might need a little love? How many loaves of bread came out of building you not be aware was actually a bakery for about three decades, 100 years ago? Oh, and in sadder news, these might be the last days for one house in particular. Continue reading “MEETING PREVIEW: Heritage Guelph Meeting for April 8, 2024”
