RECAP: Education Programs’ Fate Stymies GRCA Board Again

November’s Grand River Conservation Authority board meeting took a break from the immediate concern around next year’s budget. Sort of. The debate continued about the fate of select nature centres and the outdoor education program, and that’s a decision that was reserved another day to get more information. For everything else on the agenda, you can check out the recap… Continue reading “RECAP: Education Programs’ Fate Stymies GRCA Board Again”

MEETING PREVIEW: Grand River Conservation Membership Meeting for November 24, 2023

It’s been a busy couple of months at membership board of the Grand River Conservation Authority, so by comparison November’s meeting is going to be a little bit lighter. (Also, the annual general meeting is next month so it’s a small respite.) For this meeting there’s the usual financial updates, some tenders to approve, plus some human resources policies to update, but the big thing, again, has to do with outdoor education. RECAP: GRCA Board Has Concerns About Outdoor Education Changes

This month, the Grand River Conservation Authority membership got in on the growing number of budget activities, but that’s not where the controversy laid at this month’s board meeting. Having said that, the real controversy was in one area impacted by the budget, specifically changes to the outdoor education program. So there’s that, and also a discussion about the merits of hybrid meetings going forward. Here’s the recap… Continue reading “RECAP: GRCA Board Has Concerns About Outdoor Education Changes”

MEETING PREVIEW: Grand River Conservation Membership Meeting for October 27, 2023

Like a lot of local boards and committees this month, the focus is on money matters at October’s meeting of the Grand River Conservation Authority membership. The 2024 budget has come due for this board, and it may be the lowest increase of any board this year. Also of note, especially for those of us in Guelph, is a new piece of infrastructure at our eponymous lake in the north end. But that’s not all so check out the rest of the preview. GUELPH POLITICAST #392 – Caution’s Creek Part 1: The Past

This is one of those episodes that’s based on events that predate many of us that have come to call Guelph home in the last few decades. It’s also a story about land issues, and the desire to protect sensitive land from development. It’s had a lot of names over the years including the Kortright Waterfowl Park, the Niska Lands, and the Hanlon Creek Conservation Area, but the story around this property is just as complicated to sort out. Continue reading “GUELPH POLITICAST #392 – Caution’s Creek Part 1: The Past”

RECAP: GRCA Members Hear About the Plans for the Old Waterfowl Park

September’s meeting of the Grand River Conservation Authority’s membership had a Guelph-centric agenda item. Deliberations began about the future of the old Kortright Waterfowl Park in the city’s southwest end, and while no decisions were made at this meeting, decisions are going to be made in the near future. In other news, there may be some relief for GRCA pass holders who want to access the Elora Gorge. Here’s the meeting recap… Continue reading “RECAP: GRCA Members Hear About the Plans for the Old Waterfowl Park”

CITY PAGES: Algae Alert, Safe Semester, and Fall Fun!

The City of Guelph, and it’s various partners and agencies, put out a lot of information on a weekly basis, and while it all ends up on the City’s website somewhere, wouldn’t it be easier to just scroll through it all on one easy-to-read article on Guelph Politico here…? RECAP: GRCA Members Blaze Through a Laid Back August Agenda

After taking July off for summer vacation, and presumably enjoying the access to the facilities they manage, the Grand River Conservation Authority membership got together to handle some (brief) conservation business. The latest on the new MOUs with the members, a change in the tree purchasing pricing, and the filing of a couple of different reports made up the bulk of the agenda so let’s recap… Continue reading “RECAP: GRCA Members Blaze Through a Laid Back August Agenda”

MEETING PREVIEW: Grand River Conservation Membership Meeting for August 25, 2023

After a July break, the membership of the Grand River Conservation Authority will take part in a late August meeting in what looks like a pretty straightforward agenda with the usual financial and watershed condition updates. Let us preview the meeting… Continue reading “MEETING PREVIEW: Grand River Conservation Membership Meeting for August 25, 2023”
