This Week at Council: Downtown Renewal, Recycling Revamp

After a pretty light January, the first week of February brought a couple of packed agendas to the council’s agenda management software on their iPads. First, Committee of the Whole contained an unexpected report about the Housing Accelerator Funds, plus some grand plans about downtown. Also, there was a field trip to the east end of town for a special council workshop about the proverbial Cadillac of City services: waste management. City Council Preview – What’s on the Agenda for the Meeting on February 21?

Originally, the content of this meeting was supposed to be tackled in September, which would have made it ideally timed about a little more than a week before the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Slightly less well-timed, but no less important, council will finally get together to consider matters of Indigenous reconciliation and their place in it with a very insightful and informative exercise. City Council Preview – What’s on the Agenda for the First February 14 Meeting?

Just a day after a two-day meeting between representatives from Guelph and Wellington County, and about two weeks after it was first proposed in closed session at city council, staff have generated what’s sure to be the most controversial policy of the year. The growing visibility of encampments, especially in downtown Guelph, prompted the creation of a new bylaw, and it will be debated at this meeting! City Council Preview – What’s on the Agenda for the Second February 14 Meeting?

Here’s something interesting! In what looks to be a very busy week and month for city council, it’s a chance for them to sit as a tribunal to hear a complaint, in this case a complaint concerning a development charge. Council will hear the complaint, hear the response, and then hear the counter-response from both sides before rendering a decision. It’s all the fun of a civil trial live from the council chambers!! Well, at this meeting of council, the topic is unavoidable because not only is this special meeting and workshop of city council all about solid waste collection, it actually takes place in the building where all the solid waste is collected. Committee of the Whole Preview – What’s on the Agenda for the February 6, 2024 Meeting?

Hope everyone enjoyed the extra time off in January, because there’s a lot of serious business to take care of this February starting almost immediately with Committee of the Whole. For this first CoW of 2024, there’s some left over budget business to talk about, plus some construction business ahead for the downtown core.
