Committee of the Whole Preview – What’s on the Agenda for the September 17, 2024 Meeting?

It’s another one of those times when we’re getting two Committees of the Whole in the same month (is that the proper pluralisation?). At this second committee meeting, there’s an audit of the City’s bid to electrify the transit fleet, an update about the fiscal 2024 finances, and, perhaps most importantly, a discussion about developing a renoviction bylaw and a scan of the City of Guelph’s efforts to create more affordable housing. This Week at Council: Second Time’s the Charm for Public Space Bylaw

It was business as unusual this past week because city council should have one last week off before the start of September. Instead, there were a couple of extra meetings, one short and one pretty long. At the first meeting, council had a decision to make about the hiring of a new CAO, and in the other there was an even tougher decision regarding a matter so deeply controversial it packed the gallery. Here’s the recap… Continue reading “This Week at Council: Second Time’s the Charm for Public Space Bylaw”

City Council Preview – What’s on the Agenda for the September 10, 2024 Meeting?

The first planning meeting of the fall will have something for everyone, a new project that’s bound to be controversial, a decision on a project that was sort of controversial a few months ago, a new heritage designation, and some pruning to the City of Guelph’s new Comprehensive Zoning Bylaw. Are these the best laid plans, or will some delegates and council members have other ideas? Let’s take a look… Continue reading “City Council Preview – What’s on the Agenda for the September 10, 2024 Meeting?”

City Council Preview – What’s on the Agenda for the August 22 Meeting?

A council meeting in August?! Why yes, and not just one. The first of two city council meetings to take place in this normally slow summer month for council business will focus on a matter of hiring, and it involves city council staffing a job, then you know it can only be about one very specific job and it’s initials are C, A and O. So who will be the new top of the administrative pile at city hall? Continue reading “City Council Preview – What’s on the Agenda for the August 22 Meeting?”

This Week at Council: Over and Out for the Summer

It’s been a very consequential seven months of council. So given the stakes so far in 2024, perhaps it’s okay if council had a nice, quick and easy last meeting before the usual August summer vacation. Here’s the (brief) recap… Continue reading “This Week at Council: Over and Out for the Summer”

This Week at Council: Tiny Homes, Tiny Progress

With council wrapping up for the summer it shouldn’t be surprising that we’ve come back around to one of the biggest ongoing challenges: Creating more housing. More specifically, in this case, we’re looking at the creation of a tiny home encampment somewhere in the city. Long in the works, council was presented with the opportunity to give a greenlight to the project. So what happened? Let’s recap. Continue reading “This Week at Council: Tiny Homes, Tiny Progress”
