It’s June! The weather is nice, and there are lots of outdoor activities to take part in, so naturally this month’s Committee of the Whole agenda is one of the longest in some time. In terms of long-term issues it’s going to cover all the bases including social services, community engagement, council governance, water, Smart Cities, strategic planning and downtown renewal. There wasn’t much to do for the Wellington County Social Services committee at the May meeting, but there was a hint of some changes to come. Ontario Works was able to take the month off, but there was some interesting new developments to discuss around childcare in the region, at least in terms of future funding. Also, it was the Housing Division’s turn to tell committee what they do and how they do it. This month, the Wellington County Social Services Committee meeting will be mostly about the future of childcare and after school programs, from the County staff’s own internal plans to the outside funding changes from the Province. New funding models and new plans for the future are about half the meeting, the other half will focus on Housing 101 in Wellington County, plus maybe (?) an Ontario Works update. Wellington County’s monthly Social Services Committee will be remembered for its lengthy in-camera session that took up about half the total meeting time. As for the non-in-camera stuff, the committee looked at quarterly financials, housing states, discretionary funding, and they took a very high overview of the County’s childcare service. This was a very busy week at city council with three meetings, one of which was a super-long meeting indeed. Obviously, that long meeting concerned the confirmation vote for the 2023 budget, which saw council trying to balance community need with a hopefully smaller tax burden for the public. This balance was also kind of reinforced by another meeting this week, which looked at creating the next Strategic Plan. Not much to see for this regular meeting of city council, at least not much that you haven’t already seen. Council will revisit the new appoints they approved to Committee of the Whole, decide whether to let one of their colleagues ascend to a higher body (if elected), and will also have an in-camera conversation about the CAO’s performance objectives for the year. January’s Social Service committee meeting at the County of Wellington covered a lot of ground, but the most ground was saved for a sneak peak at the redevelopment of 65 Delhi Street into Guelph’s latest transition and supportive housing project. Along with that, the committee also heard about the paramedic response to last month’s winter storm, changes coming in the 2023 budget, and childcare user fees!
