MEETING PREVIEW: Heritage Guelph Meeting for March 6, 2025

It’s been a busy couple of months so far in 2025 for Heritage Guelph, and March is no exception. In fact, this agenda is stacked with stuff that they didn’t have the time to cover at last month’s meeting! Among those items are the future of a major piece of infrastructure downtown and the potential proactive designation of several buildings at the U of G, but in new business the committee will take a long look at Paisley Street. This Week at Council: In the Heights, and Affordable Housing!

It was another three-pack of meetings at city council this week with two meetings where council sat as a shareholder of corporations owned by the City of Guelph, and then there was the monthly planning meeting. On that one, no specific projects were discussed, but there was a lot of policy covered including new grants for affordable housing, new heights for downtown, and maybe a new train connection in the region… Continue reading “This Week at Council: In the Heights, and Affordable Housing!”

City Council Preview – What’s on the Agenda for the February 11, 2025 Planning Meeting?

This month’s planning meeting features no new developments, but it does lay the potential ground work for future developments. Coming up at this meeting is the first phase of how high we can go downtown, and another new community improvement plan. We will also hear about two objections to two different heritage designations, and, for a change of pace, we will talk about trains (on the same night as the GJR shareholder meeting)! RECAP: Heritage Guelph Pushes Staff to Do More on OR Lands and U of G!

It was rough going for the first Heritage Guelph meeting of 2025, and not just because of the content! It took the better part of an hour for City of Guelph staff to work out some technical difficulties, including a switch involving online platforms, and then they dug into the agenda, which leaned heavily on a lot of committee concerns about the future of the OR Lands, and the future of heritage buildings at the University of Guelph. Here’s the recap! Continue reading “RECAP: Heritage Guelph Pushes Staff to Do More on OR Lands and U of G!”

MEETING PREVIEW: Heritage Guelph Meeting for January 13, 2025

Heritage Guelph gets back to work promising a busy 2025 after what was definitely a very busy 2024! No major heritage designations this week, or any complicated fights about demolitions at this meeting (we think). There will be a kind of demolition discussion at this month’s meeting though, and there will be some discussion about the workload ahead, and then we will head downtown for another big project! Continue reading “MEETING PREVIEW: Heritage Guelph Meeting for January 13, 2025”

This Week at Council: The Epic Season Finale!

Two epic meetings in less than 24 hours! This is how the council year ended with a slate of controversial items from changes to planning policy to statements of intent from council. First, at the planning meeting, there was a last ditch effort to save the historic greenhouse at the University of Guelph and at the regular meeting on Wednesday, some councillor looked to dissent from the mayor’s public statements. All that and more on this last recap of the year! Continue reading “This Week at Council: The Epic Season Finale!”

RECAP: Heritage Guelph Still Has Issues with Wall Repairs

It was a pretty straightforward meeting of Heritage Guelph this October, and it even had an obligatory stop at the cemetery. The most controversial item on the agenda, even mildly, was planned repairs to the retaining wall along the river at The Boathouse, which is one of those instances where legal requirements trump heritage ones. But that’s not the last word on this meeting, so to see what you missed, check out this recap! Continue reading “RECAP: Heritage Guelph Still Has Issues with Wall Repairs”
