POLICE NOTES: Hate Crime Investigation, Cane Attack, and Dangerous American Busted

There are 145,000 stories in the Royal City, and this is some of them. Looking at a week’s worth of media releases from the Guelph Police Service, there’s a lot going on in our little city crime-wise speaking, so let’s run down some of the charges, issues, and requests for information from the Guelph Police Service over the last seven days.

Hate Crime

Guelph Police are investigating two recent incidents of hate-related graffiti since the end of May at the Chabad of Guelph location and Gordon and College. It is not known if the two incidents are related, but they’re both currently under investigation by members of the Hate Crime Investigative Unit. Assault

Last Friday afternoon a woman attended the police station to report that she was confronted outside an address on Woolwich Street just after midnight by a man who accused her of stealing his belongings. The two are known to each other. During the altercation the woman was struck several times in the head and back with a cane. Bystanders came to her assistance and the man fled the area. The investigation is ongoing.


On Tuesday, a 65-year-old Guelph man was arrested for two counts each of theft under $5,000, uttering threats and breaching an undertaking after a man entered a business near Paisley and Imperial and took some beer while threatening the clerk. The clerk recognized the man from a previous interaction last September during which he assaulted her while stealing items.


A 28-year-old Connecticut woman is charged with three counts of assault with a weapon, five counts of assault, two counts of carrying a concealed weapon, assaulting a police officer, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose and mischief under $5,000. Ten different people had reported interactions with a woman including physical assaults involving people being approached without provocation and being shoved or having their feet stomped on. On at least two occasions the subject brandished a hammer and chased victims with it. Two of the victims also reported their vehicle being damaged during an altercation with the woman. The victims included men and women who ranged in age from 12 to 73, and she arrived in Guelph to visit family two days before the first reported incident.


A 30-year-old Guelph man was charged with two counts of unauthorized possession of a firearm, unauthorized possession of a weapon and failing to comply with a release order after police obtained a search warrant for an apartment unit near Stevenson and Speedvale. A search revealed two airsoft guns and a set of brass knuckles. The tenant of the apartment is currently on a bail order with a no-weapons condition.


A Guelph boy and girl, both 17, are charged with assault with a weapon, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, uttering threats, obstructing police and two counts of breaching an undertaking last Friday night. Police were called to Gordon and Wellington where four girls were involved in a verbal altercation with another group, which was a continuation of an altercation that started at Guelph Central Station. During that incident, one of the girls was struck in the face. Both suspects are on release orders with conditions not to contact each other, and both provided fake names to officers on scene.


A 36-year-old Guelph man was charged with assault with a weapon and possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose after a man pulled a knife when an east end pharmacy wouldn’t refill a prescription.

Break-Ins

At approximately 4:15 am on Friday, the owner of a business near Grange and Victoria reported that a man had smashed a window to gain entry and then smashed a display case to remove product. The owner was watching via surveillance video. The suspect was wearing a hoody with a large white emblem on the back, a black hat and a black bandana, and he fled in a blue SUV. The superintendent of a downtown condo building called police Monday evening after discovering that a unit had been entered while the tenants were out of town. She was able to contact the tenants who returned home and confirmed a quantity of jewelry and cash were missing. It’s believed the unit was entered late Sunday or during the day Monday. Drugs

A 33-year-old Guelph man was charged with production of dimethyltryptamine, a psychedelic compound more commonly known as DMT. Search warrants were executed on Thursday morning at a storage unit in the east end and the man’s address revealed quantities of suspected controlled substances as well as a large amount of chemicals, lithium batteries, a scale, coveralls and glass jars.

Fraud

A resident reported a suspected scam after receiving a call inviting them to complete a water-usage survey for a chance to win a gift certificate. The next day, the caller told the resident they had won and asked to schedule a water test and prize delivery. Although the resident declined the test, a young male arrived shortly afterward seeking entry into the resident’s home. The resident refused entry and threatened to call police when the male could not provide details about the business he claimed to represent.

Impaired Driving

A 19-year-old Kitchener man was charged with impaired driving, dangerous driving and failing to stop after an accident on Thursday afternoon. A woman driving south of Gordon near Wellington was struck from behind by a second vehicle that then fled the area. Approximately two hours later, the involved driver attended the Collision Reporting Centre on Clair Road West. Officers spoke to the man and detected an odour of alcohol. He had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system.


A 24-year-old Brampton woman was charged with impaired driving early Sunday morning after officers received a report of a vehicle being driven erratically in the west end. The driver was asked to provide a roadside breath test, which resulted in a fail.

Theft

In the evening of June 3, two men entered a business on Woodlawn Road West and placed several Milwaukee tools – including saws, sanders and multi-tools – in a cart and walked out of the store. One of the men was described as 5’9”, 220 pounds and wearing a white t-shirt, black sweatpants, a black hat, black and white Adidas running shoes and reading glasses. Theft (Auto)

On Monday morning, an employee of the company near Speedvale and Elmira reported that a white 2005 GMC Sierra had been stolen from their lot over the weekend. Video surveillance showed an individual in a hooded sweater approaching the truck just after 10:30 pm on Saturday. They were able to get into the truck and drive it away. On Tuesday a 35-year-old Guelph man was charged with break and enter, theft of a motor vehicle, possessing stolen property over $5,000, possessing stolen property under $5,000 and seven counts of driving while prohibited after a vehicle was stolen from a downtown parking lot earlier this month. The man was known to be bound by seven different driving prohibitions.

Traffic

On Thursday a 48-year-old Brampton man was arrested for obstructing a peace officer after going to the Collision Reporting Centre and telling staff that he was a passenger in the vehicle when he was really the driver.
