POLICE NOTES: Chair Attack, Downtown Smash & Grab, and Motorcycle Stunts

There are 145,000 stories in the Royal City, and this is some of them. Looking at a week’s worth of media releases from the Guelph Police Service, there’s a lot going on in our little city crime-wise speaking, so let’s run down some of the charges, issues, and requests for information from the Guelph Police Service over the last seven days.

Assault

A 39-year-old Guelph woman was arrested for assault and assault with a weapon after police were called to a house near Allan and St. Arnaud where a dispute between a tenant and landlord about work being done in a common area became a physical altercation during which the landlord was shoved and the contractor was struck with a chair.


A 35-year-old Guelph man was charged with possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose and failing to comply with a release order after a disturbance outside a social services agency on Quebec Street Tuesday morning. Police received several calls about someone threatening people with a large knife, and when they found the man he had two two large hunting-style knives, which he was not supposed to have under a release order.


Two Guelph males, aged 17 and 15, were charged with aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, wearing a disguise while committing an offence and mischief under $5,000 early Sunday morning. Police were called to Burns and Nicklin where a 18-year-old Rockwood man was hit in the head with a weapon. Police recovered a rifle, knife and collapsible baton and the victim ended up at a Hamilton trauma centre.

Break-Ins

A 30-year-old Guelph man was charged with two counts of theft under $5,000, possession of stolen property under $5,000 and two counts of failure to comply with release order after police were called to Alma and Inkerman early Thursday morning about a man going through vehicles in the area.


A 59-year-old Guelph man is charged with break and enter and breaching a probation order after he broke into a self storage business early Sunday morning. He gained entry through a smashed window in the office area but was then trapped in a secure area until around 6 am when a customer arrived and opened the gate.


A 49-year-old Guelph man is charged with break and enter and mischief for climbing the eight-storey construction crane at the construction site of the new library Monday evening. After more than two hours of negotiation the male climbed down and was arrested.

Impaired Driving

A 30-year-old Guelph man was charged with impaired driving and careless driving, plus his licence was suspended for 90 days and his vehicle was impounded for seven days, after he was involved in a collision Tuesday afternoon at Willow and Ferman. The man has twice the legal amount of alcohol in his system, and, oh yeah, his four-year-old niece was in the car.


A 41-year-old Guelph woman was charged with impaired driving and refusing to provide a breath sample, plus her licence was suspended for 90 days, after police received several calls about a possible impaired driver near Victoria and Speedvale Sunday night.

Theft

At 4:56 pm on Thursday, three men went into a downtown business armed with hammers, smashing display cases, and removed $200,000 in merchandise form a downtown business. The suspect are described as:

  • Light-skinned, black puffy-like hair, above average height, a dark blue blazer, black undershirt, ripped light blue jeans, blue and white Nike shoes, blue medical mask
  • Dark-skinned, tall, thin build, wearing a black hooded sweater, black thin material mask, blue medical gloves, black track pants with a white vertical stripe, black shoes with white markings
  • Dark-skinned, short, slim build, wearing a black hooded sweater, black cap, black thin material mask, dark pants, black shoes with white trim, black gloves

Police are looking for a man described as light-skinned, approximately 6’0 tall, slim build, long brown hair, wearing a rainbow cowboy hat, cut-off denim shorts, and a circular tattoo on the left side of his chest. He went into a west-end store on Thursday night at 9:41 pm wielding a long wooden stick, approximately 6 feet in length, and stole a pack of cigarettes. A 2017 white Dodge Journey was taken from an east-end driveway sometime overnight between Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning. If you have any information call Constable Robert Panek at 519-824-1212, ext. 7286, or email him at rpanek [at] guelphpolice.ca.


Between 3:40 am and 3:55 am Tuesday, a man broke into the patio of a business on Stone Road and removed four speakers from their mounts. The speakers were valued at more than $3,700. The suspect was described as a male wearing a bright orange construction jacket and riding a bicycle. A 46-year-old Guelph man was arrested on one count of theft under $5,000 Wednesday morning after an Amazon package was stolen from the lobby of a south-end apartment building last Friday.

Traffic

On Thursday, a 36-year-old Guelph man was charged with stunt driving, and he got a 30-day license suspension, after police clocked a motorcyclist doing 120 kilometres per hour on Stone Road at Gordon. He was weaving in and out of traffic without signalling, popping a wheelie, and driving through a stop sign.


A 30-year-old Guelph man was charged with 12 counts of driving while prohibited, breaching a probation order and possessing a controlled substance after he was spotted by police on a motorcycle on two separate occasions, the most recent one was last Friday. Police found a small amount of suspected meth on him.
