MEETING PREVIEW: Joint Social Services and Land Ambulance Committee Meeting for May 8, 2024

After a jam-packed and extra long meeting last month to anoint the new Joint Social Services and Land Ambulance Committee, we should be looking at something a little more regularly timed this month. On this agenda, there are a couple of key childcare updates, plus some current and future construction projects under the housing file. Also, what did the second half of last year look like in terms of housing numbers? Got that answer too.

NOTE: This meeting takes place at 1 pm in the Guthrie Room at the Wellington County Administration Building on Woolwich Street.

Financial Statements as of April 30, 2024 – The report will be presented verbally at the meeting but for now it looks like the financials are on track for this point, one-third of the way through 2024.

65 Delhi St. Transitional Housing Construction Project: Status Report 5 – Work continues on this future transitional housing project in Guelph with this monthly update listing all the work that’s been completed since the last meeting, and all the work that’s coming up over the next few weeks. The project seems to be on track for completion sometime later this year.

Tender Award: Roof Replacement 387 and 411 Waterloo Ave – It’s the recommendation of County staff that T.P. Crawford Limited of Gloucester, Ontario, be awarded the tender for a rood replacement at two buildings in Guelph. The tender amount is a little less than $2 million plus HST.

Tender Award: Roof Replacement 3 Marlborough Road – Another roof replacement for another unit in Guelph, and another successful tender for T.P. Crawford Limited. This time, it’s for just over $883,000.

Housing Services Status and Activity Report 2023 Q3 and Q4 – This report covers the housing needs during the second half of last year. One of the things you will note in the eight-page report is that the average number of names on the by-name list was 164, and you will also note a slight dip in the number of households on the centralized waiting list, from 3,377 in thee fourth quarter of 3,377 to 3,181 at the same time in 2023. This is an information report for the committee with no directions recommended.

Infant and Early Years Mental Health: Resources for Early Childhood Education Project – New funding from the provincial government is being made available to address the mental health needs of young kids. The funds mostly promote professional learning for registered early childhood educators, and introducing new resources including the first ever Wellington’s Infant and Early Years Mental Health Deep Dive Learning Day, which has been scheduled for October 24.

Updates to Ontario’s Child Care Workforce Strategy and 2024 Canada-Wide Early Learning Child Care (CWELCC) Allocations – Back at the end of March the Ministry of Education announced increases to the compensation for Registered Early Childhood Educator (RECE) Programme Staff, Supervisors, and Home Child Care Visitors. The announcement also includes the removal of the $90 per square foot funding cap, increasing the grants available to eligible licensed home child care agencies, and lowering the number of child care spaces from 50 to 20 before they’re available to receive a grant. All of this is from the federal government as part of their program to develop $10 per day childcare, and to develop more childcare spaces.
