Public Health Amends Proof of Vaccination Order, Not a Human Rights Matter

It’s been a couple of days since the start of Ontario’s vaccine certification program, and it seems to be going well. Still, it seems that the original version of the mandate wasn’t tight enough for our own local public health unit, and an announcement Thursday introduced some additional coverage. U of G, Campus Police, and GPS All Warning People About (Non-COVID) Safety Issues on Campus

Heading into September, the big safety concern for the University of Guelph campus was around COVID-19, but news breaking from both the Guelph Police Service and campus police over the weekend warned students about another, sadly familiar, safety concern. The police in the city, and on campus, as well as the U of G admin are warning people to keep an eye on their drinks because “suspicious substances” are also flowing. Police and CMHA Formally Ask for Help to Expand IMPACT Program

The Integrated Mobile Police and Crisis Team (IMPACT) program has been widely considered a success in Guelph when it comes to responding to residents suffering a metal health crisis. Despite its success though, IMPACT is still limited by how many hours in the day it can operate, which is why local stakeholders are reaching out to the Government of Ontario for financial assistance to make IMPACT available 24/7. Community Responds to Pride Flag Ripped Down at Guelph School

It’s Pride Month, and that means 30 days of celebration and recognition for the members of our community who identify as LGBTQ+. So the rainbow flags are flying on flag poles all around town, but it seems like there are people in Guelph who cannot actually take any pride in Pride. In fact, some delinquent person or persons tore the Pride flag right off the pole of an area school over the weekend. Upper Grand School Board Votes to End School Resource Officer Program

The Upper Grand District School Board voted to discontinue its School Resource Officer (SRO) program at the board’s monthly meeting on Tuesday night. After nearly a year of work, the board enacted all the recommendations of the Police Presence in Schools Task Force, which effectively ends a program to have police officers regularly in schools, but maintains a relationship between schools and police. City, Police and Public Health Clarify Position on Emergency Orders

It’s been a confusing weekend following Friday’s announcement of new, more stringent COVID-19 restrictions by the Provincial government. Perhaps sensing that uncertainty, the City of Guelph, Guelph Police Service, and Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health issued a joint statement on Sunday morning that clarified the new police powers, and when they will be used. Guelph’s LGBTQ+ Community Not Pleased with New Police Diversity Officers

Police services around North America have been challenged in the last year to do better outreach with marginalized groups, and the Guelph Police Service is no exception. A recently-launched police program meant to promote better relations between the police and minority groups is now coming under criticism though with one group of residents saying that the Guelph Police never consulted their community in the first place.
