There are 145,000 stories in the Royal City, and this is some of them. Looking at a week’s worth of media releases from the Guelph Police Service, there’s a lot going on in our little city crime-wise speaking, so let’s run down some of the charges, issues, and requests for information from the Guelph Police Service over the last seven days.

Assault
Shortly after 7:30 am on Monday, police were called to a business near Woodlawn and Victoria. A man had entered the store and attempted to buy medication, but his card was declined. When the employee refused to provide the item without payment, the man swung his arms over the counter and struck the employee on the forearms. The man returned 45 minutes later and again asked for the item without payment. When he was refused, he spat toward the employee and swung at him again before leaving. The employee was not physically injured. The suspect is described as a white male, approximately 35 years old, 6 feet tall with a slim build. At the time of the incident he was wearing a black jacket and baggy, stained jeans. A 32-year-old Guelph man faces an assault with a weapon charge after a resident was struck with a wooden object Thursday morning in the area of Waterloo and Gordon. The resident told police the incident began after they asked about a long wooden object the suspect was carrying. The accused then attempted to strike the resident several times with the object after becoming upset. The resident sustained minor injuries.
Break-Ins
At approximately 7:30 am Wednesday, police were called to a residence after the homeowner discovered the shed had been entered. Security cameras showed a man entering the property early Wednesday and leaving with several items. The suspect is described as a white male, wearing black pants and black hoodie, a black baseball hat and carrying a grey or green backpack. A 43-year-old was charged with break and enter with intent, disguise with intent, breaching probation and possessing property obtained by crime early Thursday. Just before midnight Wednesday, a man entered a fenced site near Stone and the Hanlon. When officers arrived, the man fled on foot but was arrested a short time later.
Impaired Driving
A 37-year-old Arkell man was charged with impaired operation, three counts of breaching probation, using plates not authorized for a vehicle, driving with no permit, operating a motor vehicle with no insurance, operating an unsafe vehicle and careless driving after police found a vehicle stopped partially in a bike lane Tuesday morning near Arkell and Gordon. While speaking with the driver, officers observed a glass pipe containing suspected drug residue on the driver’s seat and the man performed poorly on a standard field sobriety test. Further investigation revealed the licence plates were not authorized for the vehicle, which was deemed unfit and had no permit or insurance.
Theft
Police were contacted Wednesday morning by a resident in the Marksam Park area after they discovered their vehicle had been entered sometime overnight and a wallet had been stolen. The victim had been alerted by their bank about suspected fraudulent activity and later also learned that bank cards from the wallet had been used at a nearby business.
Theft (Auto)
On Thursday morning around 10:40 am , police were called to a business at Woolwich and Suffolk where a vehicle was reported stolen from the parking lot. The suspect approached the owner, commented on the vehicle and demanded the keys while holding a sharp object. The owner refused and tried to get into the vehicle for safety. They struggled before the suspect got into the driver’s seat and drove away. The owner sustained minor injuries. The vehicle, described as a dark green older-model sedan, was last seen westbound on Suffolk toward Norfolk. The suspect is described as a Black male, approximately 5’8” with a medium build, weighing approximately 135 to 145 pounds, with black hair and a goatee. He was wearing brown construction boots, grey and black shorts, a white crewneck sweater and a black bucket hat. If you have any information, call Const. Police are investigating after a vehicle was stolen from a parking lot near Clair and Gordon Tuesday evening sometime between 7 and 7:45 pm. If you have any information, call Constable Dallas Baker at 519-824-1212, ext. 7217, or email dbaker [at] guelphpolice.ca.
On Monday afternoon, a resident near Woodlawn and Edinburgh reported that their motorcycle had been stolen from a covered parking area over the weekend. The motorcycle had reportedly been secured with a cable lock connected to a cinder block, but the lock had been cut. The owner of the motorcycle also told police the handlebars were locked on an angle making the vehicle undrivable. Police were contacted Monday morning after a resident near Victoria and Speedvale discovered their grey SUV was missing from the driveway. The vehicle had last been seen parked at the residence approximately 10 pm Sunday and was discovered missing approximately 7:30 am Monday. Two vehicles were entered between last Thursday evening and Friday morning in the northeast end of Guelph, while two more were entered between Friday evening and Saturday morning in the city’s southwest. It is not known whether the incidents are related.
Traffic
A 24-year-old Guelph driver faces stunt-driving and speeding charges after their vehicle was observed travelling 91 kilometres per hour in a posted 50 zone on Watson Parkway North Monday afternoon. The driver’s licence was suspended for 30 days and the vehicle he was driving was impounded for 14 days.
Other Notes
A 59-year-old Guelph man was charged with uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose and assault with a weapon last Saturday evening after staff at a north-end residential complex reported one resident had threatened another while holding a knife. The victim was not physically injured.
