There are 145,000 stories in the Royal City, and this is some of them. Looking at a week’s worth of media releases from the Guelph Police Service, there’s a lot going on in our little city crime-wise speaking, so let’s run down some of the charges, issues, and requests for information from the Guelph Police Service over the last seven days.

Assault
A 21-year-old Guelph man was arrested Thursday and charged with sexual assault causing bodily harm, sexual assault, assault, forcible confinement and breaching a probation order after a woman reported being sexually assaulted in a city park earlier that day. She had travelled to Guelph in the early-morning hours to meet a man with whom she had been communicating on social media for about a week. She said they went to a park to talk and she was sexually assaulted. The woman was transported to Guelph General Hospital for treatment.
A 65-year-old Guelph man was charged with assault with a weapon, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, carrying a concealed weapon, uttering threats, transportation fraud and two counts of breaching a probation order after police were called to a disturbance in St. George’s Square Thursday afternoon. A cab driver was assaulted and threatened after the suspect tried to avoid paying the fare.
A 41-year-old Guelph man was charged with assault with a weapon, uttering threats and two counts of breaching probation orders Monday after a woman was walking in the area of Woolwich and Marilyn was chased by a stranger wielding a metal pole while yelling threats.
A 39-year-old Guelph man was charged with assault with a weapon and possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose on Monday. A man stopped his car and exited with a machete in his hand and he held the weapon out as he approached another man before a bystander intervened and the suspect fled. The incident was allegedly the continuation of an earlier altercation elsewhere in the downtown. The two men are not known to each other.
A 51-year-old Guelph woman was charged with assault, mischief under $5,000, committing an indecent act and causing a disturbance last Saturday evening after a resident near Nottingham and Dublin heard a woman walking down the street yelling and swearing. She approached the complainant and stomped on his sunglasses, which were on the ground, before bumping into him as she walked past and into his backyard. The complainant began video recording the woman while calling 911. While he was on the phone with police the woman lifted her dress to expose her genitals to him.
Break-Ins
At approximately 5:15 am police were called to a business near George and Dufferin where a security guard had discovered an air conditioner had been pushed in allowing access to the building. Security video showed two men gaining entry to the business approximately 3:30 am but it is not known if anything was stolen. On Tuesday morning, staff of a business near Watson and Taggart contacted police after arriving at work to discover four laptops and a cash box missing. Anyone with information is asked to call Constable Briar Smith at 519-824-1212, ext. 7349, or email bsmith [at] guelphpolice.ca.
Just after 10:30 am last Friday, a resident near Eramosa and Stuart reported his garage had been entered approximately one hour earlier. Saws, a sander, powered screwdriver and other tools were reported missing. The suspect was caught on security cameras. He was wearing a dark hoodie with the hood up, black pants, dark grey backpack, possibly gloves and was carrying red reusable shopping bags. He was last seen heading towards downtown on Eramosa Road. Drugs
A 34-year-old Brampton man was charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking in Monday following a weeks-long investigation. Following the suspect’s arrest in an east-end parking lot, search warrants were executed on his vehicle and a residence in Brampton. Officers recovered cocaine valued at approximately $3,300 as well as more than $1,700 in cash, a digital scale and drug packaging.
Impaired Driving
A 29-year-old Guelph man was charged with impaired driving, dangerous driving, possessing a controlled substance and driving without insurance Thursday morning after a vehicle struck two parked cars on Mountford Drive. Officers noted signs of impairment from the driver and observed three empty liquor bottles and an open can of beer inside the car. They also found a quantity of suspected cocaine.
A 36-year-old Guelph man was charged with impaired driving early Friday morning after police were called to a townhouse complex on Dawson Road for reports of someone banging on doors and loudly revving his car in the parking lot. The man had tried to flee when confronted by a resident and reversed into another vehicle. Officers arrived and immediately noted signs of impairment.
A 24-year-old Cambridge man was arrested Friday for impaired driving and speeding after he was clocked driving 88 kilometres per hour in a posted zone near Fife and Elmira. Breath tests revealed he had more than twice the legal limit of alcohol in his system.
A 21-year-old Guelph man was charged with refusing to comply with a breath demand on Wednesday morning after a car was seen driving erratically near Wellington and Edinburgh. Officers located the vehicle parked crookedly in a plaza at Wellington and Gordon with the driver apparently asleep. He repeatedly refused to provide a breath sample.
A 51-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired operation on Monday morning after police were alerted to a pickup stopped on a pedestrian path near the skatepark at Wellington and Edinburgh. The driver exited the truck and asked police for help as he could hear people screaming in the bushes, and that he could see them as well. There was no one in the bushes
A 34-year-old Guelph man was charged with impaired operation and speeding on Monday night after an officer clocked a pick-up travelling 67 kilometres per hour in a 40 zone on Gordon Street. While speaking to the driver the officer detected an odour of alcohol and could see an open can of beer.
A 42-year-old Guelph woman was charged with impaired driving, dangerous driving, obstructing police and possessing a controlled substance last Friday afternoon after reports of a possible impaired driver at [checks notes] the Ontario Court of Justice on Wyndham. The driver entered one parking lot, drove across the grass and curb to get back onto the road then entered a different parking lot and stopped. Officers arrived and the female driver refused to open her door or comply with officers’ commands. An officer had to break the window to extract her from the car, and a search of the vehicle revealed a bag containing suspected methamphetamine within the driver’s reach.
A 72-year-old Guelph man was arrested for impaired driving following a driving complaint just last Friday night. Officers located him at home, where he had reversed into the garage door causing damage to the vehicle
A 19-year-old Guelph man was arrested for impaired driving just after midnight Saturday while officers were investigating a suspicious vehicle in a downtown parking lot. Breath tests revealed he had more than twice the legal limit of alcohol in his system
A 29-year-old Waterloo woman was arrested for impaired driving, driving while suspended, driving without insurance and other offences following a traffic stop on Woodlawn Road West last Saturday afternoon.
Theft
At approximately 8 am last. Saturday an older man was outside his home near Brentwood and June when he was approached by two people in a vehicle. When he approached they began praying in another language and a female passenger offered him a necklace. After they left he noticed his 14-karat gold chain was missing. The suspects were described as a possibly Indian couple, both wearing white and driving a black vehicle.
Later that afternoon, a second victim reported he was walking near York and Kingsmill when a couple in a grey SUV approached and asked for directions. As he spoke to them, a female passenger attempted to give him a ring and also removed the victim’s gold chain while trying to put another chain around the victim’s neck. The suspects were described as a man and woman, possibly Indian in their mid-30s. The male driver was wearing blue jeans, an unknown shirt and glasses. The female passenger was possibly wearing a white and blue wrap.

Traffic
Police are looking for witnesses or dashcam video after a hit and run Tuesday at 1:45 pm at Victoria and Eramosa. Officers are looking to identify a white transport truck carrying construction equipment on its trailer, that was southbound on Victoria and turned left onto Eramosa. The truck struck a vehicle during the turn and failed to stop. Anyone with information is asked to email Constable Dave Anderson at danderson [at] guelphpolice.ca.
A 53-year-old Guelph man was charged with careless driving and failing to display two licence plates under the Highway Traffic Act on Wednesday after a witness reported two men in a Jeep driving on the pedestrian path at the skatepark on Wellington Street West. The driver intentionally drove into the Speed River and continued for approximately 600 metres. Officers located the Jeep still half in the river under the Hanlon Expressway.
A 67-year-old Guelph man was charged with making an illegal turn on Tuesday night after a collision near Gordon and McGilvray. The driver of the car had been punched twice in the face by a passerby and observed significant swelling to his lip and cheek area, and a 29-year-old Georgetown man is charged with assault. The 38-year-old cyclist was transported to hospital for treatment of a leg injury.
Other Notes
At 11:40 am on Tuesday, a woman reported she had been walking through Bullfrog Pond Park when a man exposed and touched himself. Officers checked the park but were not able to locate him. The man was described as white, approximately 50 with a small build and possibly wearing all black including a backpack. A 36-year-old Guelph man and 30-year-old Guelph woman were arrested Tuesday by members of the Major Crime Unit and charged with criminal negligence causing death and two counts of failing to provide necessities of life to a child. The case dates back to January 2023 when emergency services were called to an apartment near downtown for a 20-month-old child who had been located deceased in the family home. A four-year-old child also lived in the home at the time. The arrests follow an extensive investigation.
A 31-year-old Guelph man was arrested for six counts of mischief under $5,000 and three counts of breaching a probation order last Saturday night after a witness reported a man had smashed a window at a business on Cork Street before walking along the street, damaging vehicles by slamming into them, kicking them or knocking over heavy garbage bins causing them to strike the cars.
