POLICE NOTES: Man With Firearms Found, Toyotas Taken, and Day Drinking at Stone Road Mall

There are 145,000 stories in the Royal City, and this is some of them. Looking at a week’s worth of media releases from the Guelph Police Service, there’s a lot going on in our little city crime-wise speaking, so let’s run down some of the charges, issues, and requests for information from the Guelph Police Service over the last seven days.

Assault

Just before 2 am on Wednesday, a woman called police to report that she had been threatened by another woman with a baseball bat near Gordon and Nottingham. She was approached by another woman who asked to use her phone and when the complainant declined the other woman removed a green and black bat from her backpack and uttered a threat while briefly chasing her. A short time later police received a second call reporting a man had been struck. Officers arrived to find the victim with a large bump on the back of his head. He was transported to hospital for treatment. A 42-year-old Guelph man was charged with assault late on Tuesday night after a man being transported to Guelph General Hospital due to illicit drug use lunged from the gurney and struck a paramedic on the nose with his head. Hospital security intervened and were able to take the man inside where he was arrested by responding officers.


On Tuesday morning, a 33-year-old Guelph man was arrested during a traffic stop and charged with assault, theft under $5,000 and mischief under $5,000. The charges stem from a complaint last month where a man was caught removing tools and other items from a residence in the east end. When the homeowner tried to intervene she was kick in the abdomen, which caused her to fall down. He also took her phone and smashed it when she tried to call police.


A 20-year-old Guelph woman was arrested for public mischief and assault on Monday for an incident last month downtown where a woman provided police with a detailed statement about an assault, but it turned out that she was the one doing the assaulting.


A 40-year-old Guelph man was charged with assault and public intoxication Monday afternoon after a man entered a downtown bar and was declined service because he was already intoxicated. The man became angry and punched the employee in the face.

Break-Ins

A 21-year-old Guelph man was charged with break and enter, assault with a weapon, assault causing bodily harm and mischief over $1,000 early Wednesday after the resident of an apartment on Gordon was awakened by the sound of someone smashing his air conditioner and then found a man in his unit holding a hammer. He was struck in the face with the hammer and briefly strangled before breaking free and fleeing the unit. The two are known to each other. The victim was transported to hospital for treatment.


At approximately 5:25 am last Saturday, police were dispatched for an alarm at a business near Speedvale and Marksam and while the officers observed pry marks and other damage to a rear door, no entry had been gained. Drugs

A 30-year-old Guelph man is charged with possessing a controlled substance and possessing a prohibited weapon last Friday evening after officers patrolling in Royal City Park observed a man smoking from a clear pipe within eyesight of families and young children using the park. During a search officers located a spring-assisted knife.

Impaired Driving

A 34-year-old Guelph man was charged with impaired driving on Thursday evening when police were called to a parking lot near Victoria and Eramosa after a witness saw a man exit a vehicle while drinking an alcoholic beverage. While speaking to the driver, police observed signs of impairment including slurred speech and an odour of alcohol on his breath.


A 28-year-old Guelph man was charged with impaired driving on Wednesday morning after a witness reported a man and woman exiting a vehicle in the Stone Road Mall parking lot before stumbling around the lot and then entering a store. After performing poorly on a field sobriety test he was arrested and transported to the police station, where an officer trained in drug recognition concluded his ability to operate a vehicle was impaired by drugs.


A 54-year-old Guelph man was charged with impaired driving last Saturday night after police were called to a business on Woodlawn Road West where witnesses reported a possible impaired driver in the parking lot. A test revealed that he had more than twice the legal limit of alcohol in his system.

Theft (Auto)

At approximately 6:15 pm, police were called to Campbell Road and reports of a man possibly trying to steal a truck. As officers arrived they saw a dark-coloured Toyota Land Cruiser fleeing at a high rate of speed and evading police. Officers examined the truck and found identifying decals had been removed and parts of the dash were torn out. Officials with the Mississauga company that owns the truck were contacted and were unaware it had been stolen. The investigation is ongoing, so if you have any information call Constable Kyle Sanson at 519-824-1212, ext. 7539, or email ksanson [at] guelphpolice.ca.


Four Toyota vehicles were stolen around Guelph last weekend. On Saturday morning, a resident of Victoria Road North reported his 2023 Toyota Tundra had been stolen overnight from his driveway though it was found abandoned near Downey and Ptarmigan later that morning. Also Saturday morning, a North Bay man reported his black 2024 Tundra had been stolen from the parking lot of a south-end hotel. Later Saturday morning, a Woodbridge woman reported her silver 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander stolen from the parking lot of a north-end hotel overnight. And finally, on Sunday, a Puslinch woman reported her white 2024 Lexus SUV had been stolen from a parkade in downtown Guelph sometime during the day. Traffic

A 24-year-old Brampton man was charged with speeding, stunt driving and driving while suspended on Thursday afternoon after a patrol car near Wellington and the Hanlon observed a van travelling at 103 kilometres per hour in a posted 60 zone. Investigation revealed the driver’s licence is currently suspended.

Other Notes

A 52-year-old Guelph man was arrested after police stopped a car on Wellington Street Wednesday evening when the automated licence plate reader alerted to a vehicle registered to a wanted party. The driver had missed a court date.


A 24-year-old Guelph woman was arrested for failing to appear at her May court date after a three-hour standoff at a west-end apartment building Wednesday night.


At approximately 9:25 pm last Friday, a man was walking in the area of Eramosa and Stevenson when he saw a male pointing a firearm in his direction. He left the area and called police. The two are not known to each other. Then, on Saturday, police were called to a neighbourhood close to that location for reports of someone pointing a handgun at houses and passing cars. Officers located the male and arrested him at gunpoint. A black pellet gun resembling a Glock handgun was seized. The teen was apprehended and transported to hospital for a mental health assessment, and the pellet gun was seized for destruction.
