POLICE NOTES: Chainsaw Neighbour, Self-Driving Sleeper and Long Weekend Drunk Driving

There are 145,000 stories in the Royal City, and this is some of them. Looking at a week’s worth of media releases from the Guelph Police Service, there’s a lot going on in our little city crime-wise speaking, so let’s run down some of the charges, issues, and requests for information from the Guelph Police Service over the last seven days.

Assault

Just before 4:30 pm last Friday, a man was acting erratically inside a business near Norfolk and Paisley, and there was verbal confrontation after the employee asked him to leave. Once outside the store the employee took out his phone to take a picture of the suspect, who responded by striking him in the wrist causing a small bruise. The investigation is ongoing.


A 46-year-old Guelph woman was charged with assault police on Thursday morning after a wellbeing check on a woman living at an address on Waterloo Avenue. The woman became agitated and attempted to punch an officer. She was taken to the ground and arrested. An officer sustained a hand injury during the arrest.


A 52-year-old Guelph man was charged with assault police, criminal harassment, two counts of mischief under $5,000 and uttering threats after police received reports of a man using a chainsaw to cut down a “For Sale” on a neighbouring property in the west end. Investigation revealed the involved man was already wanted for mischief and other charges related to a dispute with a different neighbour. At the police station he was combative and bit an officer on the forearm.


A 29-year-old Guelph man is charged with sexual assault, criminal harassment and breaching a probation order for a incident last Saturday in the north end. The victim saw a man outside a store and smiled at him to be polite. The man followed her inside and touched her in a sexual manner before fleeing.


A 17-year-old has been arrested and charged with assault, assault with a weapon, pointing a firearm, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, uttering threats and using a firearm while committing an offence on Monday night.  The victim went to a south-end school to meet up with a female, however he was met by the teen who began threatening him instead. The victim tried to flee but was caught and assaulted by the youth and two other males who had arrived in a vehicle, one of who pointed what’s believed to be a replica gun at the victim and pulled the trigger.

Break-Ins

At approximately 8:15 pm on Monday, police were called to a car dealership on Woodlawn Road West after a witness saw suspects using a grinder to cut the locks off a security gate. Officers arrived and attempted to block it in however the driver collided with the side of the cruiser and fled the area. The three male suspects were all wearing black clothing including hoodies. One was described as possibly southeast Asian with a black beard and also wearing black sweatpants, white shoes and a black baseball cap. They were travelling in a grey Acura RDX. Impaired Driving

A 31-year-old Whitby man was charged with impaired driving and having care of a vehicle with open cannabis on Tuesday after police were informed about a possible driver impaired by cannabis in a parking lot near Gordon and Wellington. While speaking to the driver officers noted a strong odour of burned cannabis on his person. A marijuana cigarette and open package of marijuana were observed inside the vehicle.


A 24-year-old Guelph man was charged with impaired driving, dangerous driving, possessing a controlled substance and driving while suspended after a two-vehicle collision on Teal Drive. One driver to be showing signs of impairment. He was placed under arrest and a search revealed a baggie of suspected cocaine in his pocket.


A 43-year-old Guelph man was charged with impaired driving and dangerous driving last Saturday evening after police got reports of an impaired driver on Woodlawn East. A short time later, an officer observed the involved vehicle turning into a driveway and parking half on the grass. There were two children under 10 in the back seat of the car without seatbelts and tests revealed that the driver had more than twice the legal amount of alcohol in his system. It was also learned that the driver here was previously charged with impaired driving last September, and those charges are still before the courts. His vehicle was seized indefinitely to prevent further offences.


A 30-year-old Guelph man was arrested for impaired driving after an officer observed a vehicle being driven erratically at 11:30 pm last Friday


An 18-year-old Mississauga man was arrested for impaired driving and possessing a fake driver’s licence after a traffic stop on Stone Road West at 12:30 am last Saturday


A 23-year-old Burlington man was arrested for impaired driving after an intoxicated man was seen leaving a business on Woodlawn Road West at 1:45 am last Saturday


A 29-year-old Aurora man was arrested for impaired driving after witnesses observed a motorcycle being driven erratically in the parking lot of a business on Woodlawn Road West at 2:25 am Sunday.

Theft

Police were called just after 2 pm on Wednesday to an address near Starwood and Watson after suspects had entered a unit under construction and stole tools valued at approximately $8,000. At approximately 10:15 pm on Tuesday, police were called to an address on Stone Road West. The victim said he was working on a university assignment in the living room then went into the kitchen to prepare food and when he returned, his laptop was missing. The victim looked outside and saw a man holding the laptop. He yelled at the man, who fled with the computer. The suspect was wearing a large brown jacket, black winter hat and black pants and was riding a black bicycle. Traffic

A 29-year-old Guelph man was charged with speeding and stunt driving Thursday evening after he was clocked driving his motorcycle at 134 kilometres per hour in a posted 60 zone along Maltby Road West. His licence was suspended for 30 days and the bike was impounded for 14 days.


A 94-year-old man was charged with failing to yield to a pedestrian Thursday morning after a 14-year-old boy had been hit by a sedan at Stone and Scottsdale. He was transported to hospital for treatment of facial injuries.


A 60-year-old New York man charged with careless driving last Saturday evening after a man was seen asleep behind the wheel of his Tesla while it drove north on the Hanlon Expressway. An officer located the vehicle driving on the Hanlon near Speedvale Avenue and confirmed the driver was asleep.
