POLICE NOTE: Missing Mowers, Store Assault, and Bitcoin Blitz

There are 145,000 stories in the Royal City, and this is some of them. Looking at a week’s worth of media releases from the Guelph Police Service, there’s a lot going on in our little city crime-wise speaking, so let’s run down some of the charges, issues, and requests for information from the Guelph Police Service over the last seven days.

Assault

Just after 7 pm last Friday, police were called to a business on Stone Road West after two people were observed trying steal product from the store. One of the subjects struck the employee several times in the face and their glasses were smashed. A customer tried to assist the employee and was also assaulted. The first subject was described as a white female with short dark hair, a grey hoodie, black winter jacket, grey track pants, black and white shoes and black Nike backpack and baseball cap. The second was described as a white female, with long purple hair, a blue coat, black pants and a backpack. Both were riding bicycles. A 21-year-old Guelph woman was charged with assault with a weapon, mischief under $5,000, uttering threats and breaching a probation order on Wednesday afternoon after a client at a supportive housing residence became enraged and tried to attack staff by throwing glass jars at them. She also smashed jars all over the house and caused an estimated $1,000 in damage to a door trying to access a staff area.

Break-Ins

Last Friday police were called to a business near Speedvale and Eramosa. Sometime overnight the glass front door was smashed to gain entry and a security camera was turned around. The Bitcoin machine was damaged, though it is not known if any theft occurred. A 66-year-old Guelph woman was arrested for mischief over $5,000, assault with a weapon and break and enter for an incident last month at a home near Kortright and Ironwood where the suspect smashed a large window and gained entry to the home before confronting the victim while wielding a brick. The victim fled the house but was followed on foot by the suspect. The two are known to each other.

Drugs

A 38-year-old Guelph man was charged with four counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking, unauthorized possession of a firearm, careless storage of a firearm, tampering with a firearm serial number and possessing proceeds of crime under $5,000 after a search warrant was executed on two apartments near Willow and Dawson Wednesday morning. Officers recovered quantities of suspected fentanyl, crystal meth, cocaine and hydromorpohone with a total value of $17,000, plus they located a loaded 9mm handgun with the serial number removed, two replica firearms and nearly $7,000 in cash. A 44-year-old Guelph woman was also charged with three counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking and possessing proceeds of crime under $5,000.

Impaired Driving

A 64-year-old Cambridge woman is charged with impaired driving and dangerous driving on Monday morning after police were informed about car being driven erratically coming into town on Highway 6. The caller advised they had been following the vehicle since Fergus and had seen it travelling through red lights and it was involved in a minor collision outside of Guelph. When she was was stopped by police it was determined that she was impaired by drugs.


A 39-year-old Guelph man was charged with flight from police, failing to stop and novice driver having alcohol in his system early Sunday morning after a patrol was flagged down because someone had fallen asleep in his vehicle at Willow and the Hanlon. The driver awoke and started driving, but he was pulled over briefly before speeding away, although the officer was able to locate the vehicle and then the driver a short time later.

Theft

On Thursday, police were called to a property near Woodlawn and Muskoka where the owner of a landscaping company reported that a gate leading into the property had been opened after a lock was cut off and two orange Kubota zero-turn riding mowers with a combined value of approximately $28,000 were stolen. On Tuesday, officers were called to a business near Willow and Silvercreek after the cables from the main building to an exterior trash compactor had been cut and removed. It is believed the theft occurred sometime between Sunday evening and Monday evening. Monday morning, a resident of Speedvale Avenue East reported finding the door of his detached garage open and the garage ransacked. A Milwaukee Sawzall and the keys to the complainant’s riding mower were noted to be missing. On Monday morning, a resident near Whitelaw and Fife reported that someone entered his backyard overnight and accessed the shed. A teal-coloured Trek Marlin 7 mountain bike was stolen along with a Stihl leaf blower. A 16-year-old boy was arrested for robbery Wednesday after several teens from a Guelph high school were at a nearby plaza for lunch when one was assaulted and had his backpack stolen. The victim was not physically injured.

Theft (Auto)

A 26-year-old Toronto man has been charged with a number of new offences in connection to the theft of a 2021 Ram pick-up in March. Police believe the man is part of a sophisticated auto theft ring targeting high-end vehicles for resale and recovered two on-board diagnostic (OBD) vehicle reprogramming devices, a number of break-in tools and several counterfeit bills during the investigation. On Thursday officers arrested the same man on charges including 11 new counts of motor vehicle theft, 10 counts of possessing stolen property over $5,000, two counts of possessing an electronic device for the purpose of motor vehicle theft, possessing break-in instruments and possessing counterfeit currency.

Traffic

A 52-year-old Guelph man, was charged with stunt driving, speeding and refusing to provide identification after a patrol clocked a pick-up truck travelling at 98 kilometres per hour in a posted 50 zone last Friday on Speedvale Avenue East.


A 24-year-old Kitchener man was charged with careless driving, stunt driving and failing to stop for a red light early Sunday after a vehicle was observed in the area of Speedvale and Silvercreek after turning a corner very quickly, causing the tires to screech. The driver soon lost control of the car, which caused it to leave the road and collide with a tree and sign.

Other Notes

On Friday, a 55-year-old Kitchener man was arrested for mischief over $5,000, disguise with intent, possessing break-in instruments and breaching a bail order for damage done to two rooftop units in course of stealing less than $100 worth of copper wire.
