POLICE NOTES: Baseball Bat Attack, Grand Theft Perfume, and Warming Truck Stolen

There are 145,000 stories in the Royal City, and this is some of them. Looking at a week’s worth of media releases from the Guelph Police Service, there’s a lot going on in our little city crime-wise speaking, so let’s run down some of the charges, issues, and requests for information from the Guelph Police Service over the last seven days.

Assault

Police are investigating after a man was beaten with a baseball bat inside his own apartment near Willow and Edinburgh early Sunday. A man in his 50s reported that he was in his kitchen when an unknown male entered the unit and struck the victim in the head with a wood baseball bat. The victim fell to the ground and was struck several more times. The assailant took some cash off a table and fled. The victim was transported to hospital for treatment of head injuries. It is believed the two are known to each other and this was a targeted incident. The investigation is ongoing.


A 36-year-old Guelph woman was charged with assault, uttering threats, mischief under $5,000 and failing to attend court Tuesday morning after woman reported that the she was slapped in the face, punched repeatedly in the head and threatened by a neighbour with whom she had ongoing issues, and later a front window of the victim’s house was smashed. The suspect in this case was wanted for failing to appear in court on several outstanding charges.


An 18-year-old Parry Sound woman is charged with assaulting a police officer and causing a disturbance after midnight last Saturday after police responded to reports of three women fighting at the Wilson Street Parkade. One of the women was intoxicated to the point she had vomited, urinated and defecated all over herself and when a passerby attempted to care for the woman, she began throwing punches. A police officer was struck several times in the chest while trying to assist, and covered in bodily fluids in the process.


A 29-year-old Guelph man was charged with assault with a weapon, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, theft under $5,000, possessing stolen property, two counts of breaching probation and breaching a release order last Friday night. Police were called to a Woodlawn West business after a suspect tried to steal a jacket and then pulled a knife on a staff member when they tried to stop him. Officers located three credit cards which had previously been reported stolen when the suspect was arrested.

Break-Ins

A 47-year-old Guelph man is charged with break and enter for an October 29 break-in at a residence on Speedvale Avenue East. Someone broke into a shed and stole a quantity of tools and welding equipment. The stolen items were valued at $1,200.


A 34-year-old Guelph man was charged with break and enter, seven counts of breaching a probation order and two counts of breaching a release order for a break-in at an east end home last Friday night. Also, a 58-year-old Guelph woman was charged with break and enter, breaching a probation order, facilitating a breach of probation and facilitating a breach of a release order. The couple were former tenants of the property, and the two were already released on conditions that they don’t associate.

Drugs

A 25-year-old Guelph man was charged with possessing a controlled substance and two counts each of carrying a concealed weapon and unauthorized possession of a weapon downtown on Thursday. A police patrol arrested a man using substances downtown, and a search revealed two spring-assisted knives, including one which had been modified so the blade remained open with elastic ties.

Fraud

Impaired Driving

A 45-year-old Guelph man was charged with impaired operation and driving while suspended, and his vehicle was seized indefinitely to prevent further offences under the Highway Traffic Act. The car was picked up by an automated licence plate reader on Thursday near Municipal Street, and the driver had more than twice the legal limit in his system. Investigation also revealed the male is a suspended driver as a result of impaired driving charges in October, 2023, and June of this year.


A 63-year-old Guelph man was charged with impaired operation and possessing cocaine for the purpose of trafficking on Wednesday afternoon after police found an unconscious man in the driver’s seat of a car in a parking lot at Wellington and Imperial. He was impaired by a narcotic, and a search of the vehicle officers located quantities of cocaine and crack cocaine, drug paraphernalia and a scale.


A 20-year-old Hamilton man was charged with impaired operation early Sunday morning after a man was seen leaving a downtown bar and seen getting into his pick-up truck. Investigation revealed the male had been charged with impaired operation in Hamilton two months earlier.

Theft

At approximately 6:30 pm on Thursday evening police were called to a business near Silvercreek and Willow after three men entered the business, stole 18 fragrance gift sets with a total value of $2,556 in reusable shopping bags. They were all described as Black males, one was 6 feet tall, black North Face puffy coat, white hooded sweater, black shoes with white soles and a face mask; the second was  5’10,” white puffy coat with grey hoodie, light jeans, white sneakers and a face mask; and the third was 5’8,” black puffy coat, black jogging pants, black and white sneakers and a face mask. At 8:20 am on Tuesday, police were called to a residence near Starwood and Summit Ridge after a resident had left his grey 2014 Toyota Tacoma warming up in the driveway wheen it was taken. The couple were planning an overnight trip and a suitcase containing clothing and medication was inside the vehicle. A trailer containing teaching models was stolen from Conestoga College’s Guelph campus sometime after 7 am on Sunday at the Speedvale Avenue West campus. The black enclosed trailer has ‘Conestoga College Motive Power’ on the outside, and the trailer and contents are valued at $35,000. On Tuesday a 32-year-old Guelph man was arrested for two counts of theft under $5,000 for the October 29 theft of $2,800 worth of scotch and tequila from the LCBO at Paisley and Imperial.

Traffic

Police are looking for a truck described as a black Ford F250 Super Duty which had several scrap items in the bed, including a dishwasher or washing machine. The truck was involved in a hit and run collision involving a pedestrian on November 22 at around 5 pm in the area of Goodwin Drive and Hodgson Drive. A 29-year-old Fergus woman was charged with speeding and stunt driving after clocking a Mini travelling 96 kilometres per hour in a 50 zone while conducting speed enforcement at Woodlawn at Country Club Drive.

Other Notes

At approximately 8:25 am on Wednesday a 16-year-old girl was waiting at a bus stop near Paisley and Imperial when a man stopped his car, opened the door and offered her a ride. She declined and he drove away. He was described as a Black male with short black hair and an accent. He was driving a burgundy four-door car believed to be a Ford. Police are investigating after a motorist twice approached a young child Tuesday and offered him candy. This incident happened shortly after 4 pm in the area of Willow and Elmira, a 12-year-old boy said he was walking home from school when a vehicle travelling the opposite way slowed. Along with the candy offer, the drive also claimed to know the boy’s father. When the boy shook his head no, the drive made a U-turn and followed him and then offered him candy again. The subject male was described as having brown skin, possibly Indian, and wearing a black sweater. He was driving a white Hyundai Elantra, approximately 2017, and had a small child in the back seat. On Thursday an 18-year-old Guelph man – who was 17 at the time of the offence – was arrested and charged with possessing child pornography and making child pornography available. The arrest was made based on information received from the US-based National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children about images which had been uploaded in August to a social media site. Investigation led to the identity of the person who uploaded the images.


A 27-year-old Acton man was charged with failing to comply with a bail order on Tuesday after r he was found in possession of a cellphone contrary to a bail condition. Investigation revealed he is on bail for two counts of possessing child pornography with a condition that he not possess any device capable of storing digital data.


At approximately 5:35 pm on Monday, the Guelph Police Service was notified by INTERPOL of a Snapchat story which referenced a school shooting. Officers spoke to the teen in the presence of her mother and she was very remorseful and stated the comment was intended only as a joke.
