POLICE NOTES: Bus Stop Assault, Bowling Ball Assault, and Jail Break-In

There are 145,000 stories in the Royal City, and this is some of them. Looking at a week’s worth of media releases from the Guelph Police Service, there’s a lot going on in our little city crime-wise speaking, so let’s run down some of the charges, issues, and requests for information from the Guelph Police Service over the last seven days.

Assault

Police are looking for an Asian male, approximately 5’7” with a slim build, short black hair and a slight moustache, and driving a blue Honda Civic after an assault at a bus stop outside Bullfrog Mall Monday at 3:15 pm. The victim was waiting for a bus when he was approached by a younger male who asked for a cigarette, but refused as the other male appeared underage. The subject began walking away, then turned and struck the victim several times from behind. The victim fell to the ground and hit his head. A 45-year-old Guelph man was charged with assault with a weapon, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose and carrying a concealed weapon. The man pulled a knife from his pocket and waved it at the employee of a business at Gordon and Harvard in a threatening manner when he was asked to leave for yelling obscenities at customers.


A 29-year-old Guelph man faces charges including assault with a weapon, several counts of breaching probation and release orders and failing to attend court after a woman was hit in the face with a bowling ball on Sunday afternoon. The suspect was found to be on conditions not to have contact with the victim.

Break-Ins

Several windows were smashed Thursday night at around 9:15 pm at a business near York and Victoria. A man entered the vestibule, picked up a hard plastic tray, and smashed several windows and some glass doors. The damage is estimated at more than $2,000. On Monday afternoon, police were called to a business near Monarch and Curtis where sometime the previous night someone cut a whole in the fence and entered the property. A vehicle parked in the lot was entered and a minor theft reported. The damage to the fence is estimated at $300. Police were called to the old Ontario Reformatory at 4 am last Sunday after three individuals were seen entering the compound. A gate had been cut and pulled back, allowing access to the fenced area. A broken window was also located though no entry was gained. The suspects, described as three people in dark clothing, were not located. Fraud

A 25-year-old Brampton woman was arrested by another police service and returned to Guelph Thursday so she can face 77 charges related to fraud and using forged documents. The charges stem from a series of incidents in the summer of 2022 where a man and woman attended TD Canada Trust branches around Southern Ontario, opened bank accounts in false names and presented forged cheques from a well-known employer and  claimed that they needed cash urgently to feed their children so that the hold period would be waived. The total loss to TD is estimated at more than $55,000.

Impaired Driving

A 23-year-old Guelph woman was charged with impaired driving and dangerous driving, plus her licence was suspended for 90 days after a three-vehicle collision Wednesday morning near Imperial and Massey. One of the vehicles was a school bus, but there were no students on the bus and no injuries were reported.


A 25-year-old Guelph man was charged with impaired driving and failing to stop after a collision, and his licence was suspended for 90 day, after being involved in two different collisions Tuesday night. He had more than twice the legal limit of alcohol in his system.


A 48-year-old Guelph man and 47-year-old Erin woman were each charged with impaired driving after police were called about a possible impaired driver near Wyndham and Macdonell Monday night. While the witness was on the phone, the male driver and his female passenger switched seats and then they drove away, but when police caught up with them it tuned out that they both had more than the legal amount of alcohol in their system.


A 26-year-old Puslinch man was charged with impaired driving after police were called to the Market Parkade early Saturday morning where a vehicle crashed against the exit gate with the driver slumped over behind the wheel. The driver had more than three times the amount of alcohol in his system.


A 60-year-old Guelph man was charged with impaired driving after police were notified about a collision in the area of Wellington and Neeve on Saturday afternoon. He also had more than three times the legal amount of alcohol in his system.

Theft

Police are investigating after two Ram pickup trucks were stolen last weekend, and a third was nearly stolen. At 8 am last Friday, a resident near Victor and MacAlister reported his black 2022 Ram stolen from his driveway overnight, and an hour later a grey 2023 Ram stolen was reported stolen from a driveway near Summerfield and Colonial. It was also reported that around 2 am Friday, a man was seen approaching a Ram pickup near Goodwin and Dominion before going back to a vehicle and leaving the area.

The man is described as 5’8” and wearing dark clothing with a hood and a blue medical mask, and the vehicle was described as a dark-coloured Dodge Durango. If you have any information, call Constable Konrad Babol at 519-824-1212, ext. 7189, or email him at kbabol [at] guelphpolice.ca.


Just after 11 am on Sunday, police were called to the home under renovation near York and Cityview to find that someone had broken into the attached garage before gaining access to the house and stealing around $700 in tools. A 37-year-old Guelph man and 23-year-old Guelph woman are both charged with possessing stolen property over $5,000 and occupying a stolen vehicle after police found a 2016 GMC Thursday afternoon on Stephanie Drive and discovered that it was stolen a few days earlier from Erin. The man is also charged with being unlawfully in a dwelling and mischief under $5,000, while the woman is additionally charged with breaching probation.


A 36-year-old Kitchener woman turned herself in earlier this week and is charged with theft under $5,000 in relation the theft of Pokemon cards from a Stone Road business last month.

Other Notes

A British Columbia man was arrested in relation to inappropriate contact with a Guelph child. Last October, the Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) Unit began an investigation into a local 12-year-old girl being exploited for intimate videos and images by an unknown person on the social media platform Snapchat. Investigation led to a student at the University of British Columbia.


A 33-year-old Guelph man was charged with committing an indecent act and breaching a probation order after exposing himself to a stranger in the area of Woolwich and Norwich Tuesday morning. Investigation revealed he was placed on probation last month for two counts of committing an indecent act and other offences.


A 14-year-old teen was arrested for four counts of failing to comply with an undertaking and possessing counterfeit money after police were called to a plaza on Speedvale East where the teen was being held down by a family friend. The teen’s mother told officers her son is on two different undertakings with conditions not to drink and to be home by 9 pm, and the friend found him drunk. Police meanwhile, they found $8,000 in fake money, including 85 $100 bills, on him during a search.
