POLICE NOTES: Remains Found, Big Drug Busts, and Engagement Party Violence

There are 145,000 stories in the Royal City, and this is some of them. Looking at a week’s worth of media releases from the Guelph Police Service, there’s a lot going on in our little city crime-wise speaking, so let’s run down some of the charges, issues, and requests for information from the Guelph Police Service over the last seven days.

Human Remains Found in Royal City Park

Police were called to Royal City Park on Wednesday afternoon when they received a report about human remains in the area, and when they arrived just after 4 pm, officers found a deceased adult man between a storage shed and treed area at the edge of the park. The investigation is ongoing, but the man has been identified and his next of kin has been notified. Assault

A 63-year-old Guelph man was charged with assault with a weapon, carrying a concealed weapon, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose and unauthorized possession of a weapon. A cyclist was tased by a pedestrian after they got into an argument in the area of Woolwich and London on Wednesday night.


A 28-year-old Guelph man was charged with robbery, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, carrying a concealed weapon, possessing a credit card and failing to comply with a release order on Tuesday afternoon. The suspect pulled a knife on the loss prevention officer after he was stopped tying to leave the Silvercreek North store wearing the clothes he was trying on. Oh, and he had some lady’s credit card on him too.


A 26-year-old Guelph man charged with assault early on Sunday morning after a man trying to intervene in a verbal dispute in the Macdonell Street parking lot was punched in the face by another man not involved with the dispute.


A 38-year-old Guelph man was charged with assault with a weapon and assault after another man was struck in the head with a stick while a woman was grabbed and sustained a laceration on her finger. The incident happened at an engagement party on Sunday evening.

Break-Ins

Last Saturday, police were called to the scene of a break and enter at a construction site near Cork and Wyndham. Sometime overnight, unknown suspects entered the site and removed approximately $5,000 worth of tools including framing guns, saws, drills and batteries. Police were called to a building near Willow and Silvercreek on Tuesday morning after a ground-floor office had been entered over the weekend. An air conditioning unit was forcefully removed from the wall, causing approximately $1,000 in damage, plus the office was ransacked and a set of master keys to the building were stolen. Police were called to a business near York and Stevenson early Monday after three people were caught on video breaking and entering, but when police arrived no one was there and nothing appeared to be stolen. The suspects were described as a white male wearing a black hoodie, black pants and a red backpack; a white male in a white sleeveless hoodie, black pants, a black backpack and red shoes; and a white female wearing a dark hoodie, camouflage capri pants and black slip-on shoes. Drugs

Two 35-year-old Guelph men were each charged with six counts of possessing controlled substances for the purpose of trafficking after officers from another service had arrested a man at a Dawson and Willow residence for violating a parole order. Search warrants turned up large amounts of suspected crystal meth, fentanyl, cocaine and other controlled substances with an estimated street value in excess of $63,000 along with two prohibited knives, a conducted energy weapon and cash.


A 49-year-old Kirkland Lake man and 38-year-old Guelph woman are each charged with two counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking after a wellness check on a man and woman sleeping in a car at the side of the road near Downey and Laird. A search of the vehicle revealed large amounts of suspected fentanyl and crystal meth with a total estimated value of $75,000.

Theft

A delivery van was stolen from an address near Edinburgh and Preston last Saturday afternoon while the driver was inside making a delivery, and even though the van was recovered a short time later in the south end, the victim’s wallet and cell phone was missing. A credit card was used even later that day in Halton Region. The suspect was described as a slender male with brown skin and wearing a red mask, gloves and possibly a beige jacket. Traffic

A 66-year-old Brantford man is charged with dangerous driving causing bodily harm and failing to stop at a collision involving bodily harm after a 60-year-old man was struck in the crosswalk at Woodlawn and Imperial last Thursday morning. The vehicle left the area, but was later found by police and the driver denied being involved in the collision in the first place. He turned himself in to police on Monday. Other Notes

A 15-year-old Guelph male was charged with failing to comply with a release order after police were called for a disturbance near Auden and Eastview on Thursday morning. Investigation revealed the the youth, bound by house arrest conditions, had left the residence prior to police arrival. He was located at approximately 5:30 pm and arrested.


On Wednesday night four youths were out on bikes in the area of Kortright East when one of them picked up a lawn ornament and threw it at a house, smashing the ornament and the window and causing approximately $1,500 in damage in the process. The responsible youth was identified and spoken to in the presence of his parents. Officers used their discretion and did not lay a criminal charge, but instead the 16-year-old must pay for the damage and complete a diversion program.
