City council doesn’t get to leave for the unofficial first long weekend of summer without learning something first. In yet another workshop-style meeting meant to orient council to the internal working and mechanics of City Hall, the topic this time is, fittingly, communications. Council will learn how City Hall shares and receives information, and then they’ll learn how the City directly helps the community.
NOTE #1: Delegates will be able to appear at this meeting in-person or via tele-presense but you do have to registerwith the clerks office before 10 am on Friday April 14. You can also submit written delegations and correspondences for agenda items.
NOTE #2: In addition to meeting in-person, this meeting will also be live-streamed on the City of Guelph’s website here.
NOTE #3: This is a special Wednesday meeting, there is no meeting on Tuesday this week.
Communications and Community Engagement Orientation – In the first part of this workshop, we talk about talking. Communications is when City Hall talks to us, whether that’s promoting initiatives, sharing emergency information, or telling the public about upcoming events and meetings. Then there’s community engagement, which is when we, the public, talk to City Hall. Council will cover the new “One City. One Voice. Shared Purpose.” communications strategy, look to future projects (new website design coming in 2024-25!) and the principles of good community engagement in City policy.
Community Investment in Focus – This portion of the meeting will look at the ways that the City of Guelph invests directly in people and groups and not just in the provision of City services. That means something like Community Benefit Agreements as well as the Affordable Bus Pass, Community Grants, and the Welcome to Guelph program for new Canadians. Council will also hear about all the community groups that the City partners with like the Rotary Club, the Royal Canadian Legion, and the Wellington Guelph Drug Strategy.
