POLICE NOTES: Smash & Grab, Drive By BBs, and the Machete Bandits

There are 145,000 stories in the Royal City, and this is some of them. Looking at a week’s worth of media releases from the Guelph Police Service, there’s a lot going on in our little city crime-wise speaking, so let’s run down some of the charges, issues, and requests for information from the Guelph Police Service over the last seven days.

Assault

Police are looking for three young males in a newer model, white Buick SUV who yelled profanities at a cyclist near Kortright and Rickson before proceeding to shoot at him with a blue and orange BB Gun at 5:30 pm last Saturday. A 34-year-old Markham man turned himself in to police Thursday and was arrested for assault and impersonating a police officer for a disturbance in April outside a restaurant at Clair and Gordon.


A 19-year-old Guelph man was charged with assault after a Good Samaritan tried to break up a fight between two men downtown Wednesday afternoon. The victim was treated for facial injuries.


A 37-year-old Guelph woman was charged with assault with a weapon, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose and uttering threats after a disturbance at a downtown social service agency Monday afternoon. Two women had been involved in an altercation during which one was pushed before they were separated. The assailant then brandished a knife and began walking around inside the building while threatening to harm the victim.

Break-Ins

Just after 4 am on Wednesday, police were called to a business near Stone and Scottsdale were three male suspects broke in through the front door, smashed several display cabinets and stole a quantity of fragrances, cosmetics and electronic devices were stolen.

  • The first suspect is described as 20-25 years, heavy set with olive skin and long black hair in a ponytail. He was wearing a grey Roots hoodie, tan shorts, black and white Puma sandals, a grey bandana over his face and blue gloves.
  • The second is described as 18-25 years, slim build with tanned skin and black hair. He was wearing a black hoodie with a large design of a red cherub with horns, green pants and black shoes.
  • The third is described as having a medium build and was wearing a black Adidas hoodie with a large yellow or gold logo and white stripes on the sleeves, blue pants and a black ski mask.

Drugs

A 28-year-old Guelph man and 26-year-old Guelph woman are charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking after the Break Enter Auto Theft Unit executed a search warrant Tuesday morning at an address near Tovell Drive and Westra Drive. The man was in possession of $3,500 cash when he was arrested and police seized approximately $10,000 worth of cocaine divided into multiple bags, psilocybin and a digital scale.

Fraud

Impaired Driving

A Guelph woman was charged with operation while impaired and her driver’s license was suspended for 90 days after police were contacted about a possible impaired driver leaving a business at Stone and Scottsdale.

Theft

An orange 2019 Harley Davidson Sportster was stolen from a residence near Goodwin and Farley. The bike, which was valued at more than $20,000, had been parked in the lot a week earlier but it is not known when it was stolen. Three men stole numerous bottles of alcohol from a business at Gordon and Wellington, and one of the dropped a machete on their way out. The three are described as having brown skin and full facial hair, one was wearing a black sweater, dark pants and a black toque; another was wearing a baby blue half-zip sweater over black t-shirt with white writing, burgundy turban, carrying a large patterned reusable bag; and the third was wearing a long-sleeved black, white and grey striped shirt, blue Toronto Maple Leafs cap, carrying a reusable Home Depot bag. Police are looking for the man who stole  bike outside a business near Silverceek and Campbell last Friday. The suspect was described as a white male 30-40 with a thin build. He was wearing grey shirts, a grey t-shirt and Puma sandals, and a witness got a picture of the thief. Approximately $5,000 in DeWalt power tools was stolen from a business near the intersection of Stone and Research Lane last Friday night at around 9 pm. The man is described as, having a smaller build, a short beard, mid-’20s, brown in skin colour, wearing a black Toronto Raptors hat, a red shirt, black pants, and a grey backpack. A 56-year-old Guelph man is charged with robbery and uttering death threats after a person doing laundry in his north-end apartment building was threatened by a neighbour. When police took him into custody, they discovered the same man was wanted for assaulting an employee and fleeing a south-end business last Friday with more than $300 in stolen product.

Traffic

A Guelph woman in her 70s was crossing the street when she was struck by a vehicle driven by another Guelph woman in her 70s in the area of Bowen and Norma at 1:25 pm on Thursday. The victim was transported to a Hamilton trauma centre with significant injuries and remains in critical condition. The investigation is ongoing, so anyone who witnessed the collision and has not yet spoken to police, or who has other information, is asked to call Constable Dave Anderson of the Traffic Unit at 519-824-1212, ext. 7444 or via email at danderson [at] guelphpolice.ca.


A 39-year-old Guelph man is charged with driving while prohibited after one cruiser’s automated licence plate reader detected a vehicle that was possibly being driven by a man who is not licensed. The vehicle, which was not registered to the man, was impounded for 45 days.


A 19-year-old Owen Sound man is charged with flight from police, dangerous driving, driving while suspended, driving without insurance and possessing a controlled substance. On Sunday evening, a police patrol near Norfolk and Suffolk was alerted that a car stopped on the street belonged to a suspended driver. The car sped away, but the police caught up to it a short time later on Woolwich after it sustained front-end damage and had grass and dirt stuck to it.
