POLICE NOTES: Stabbing Arrest, Trucks Targeted, and Billing Scam

There are 145,000 stories in the Royal City, and this is some of them. Looking at a week’s worth of media releases from the Guelph Police Service, there’s a lot going on in our little city crime-wise speaking, so let’s run down some of the charges, issues, and requests for information from the Guelph Police Service over the last seven days.

Assault

Last Friday, a 26-year-old Guelph man turned himself in to police and was charged with aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, assault, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose and uttering threats. The arrest has made in connection to a June 2 stabbing in front of a house at Eramosa and Speedvale on June 2. Another man is still at large. Break-Ins

More than $13,000 worth of wire was stolen during a break-in at a business near Curtis and Monarch early Sunday morning. Video showed two people breaking a lock to open the gate and gain access to the compound. They began unspooling and cutting wire and loading it into a white panel van with no markings, and then they broke into a trailer and stole a Honda generator and cables and also stole an unknown quantity of scrap wire. A 33-year-old Guelph man was charged with break and enter for a break-in at a downtown apartment last month.


A 33-year-old Guelph man was charged with break and enter when he was caught leaving a vacant house near Metcalfe and Emma on Sunday evening.

Fraud

A Guelph woman in his 70s was scammed out of $12,000 after she got into a billing dispute with a streaming service. She spoke to someone on the phone who she believed was a representative of the company who “accidentally refunded her $12,000” instead of the $120 she was looking to get back, and thenhe convinced the victim to send him $12,000 cash to correct the error. The victim withdrew the funds from the bank over two days and mailed it to an address in Barrie. Police are reminding everyone to be vigilant when talking to someone you don’t know on the phone or online.

Impaired Driving

A man found in the area of Stone and Scottsdale sitting the driver’s seat of his car with the motor running was charged with operation while impaired after failing a breath test on Thursday evening.


A 79-year-old woman was charged with operation while impaired after she parked her car across the sidewalk in front of a business near Woolwich and Speedvale on Wednesday afternoon.


A 39-year-old Guelph woman was charged with impaired driving and her licence was suspended for 90 days after a three-vehicle collision at Victoria and Elizabeth Sunday afternoon.

Theft

Police are looking for two men after they allegedly stole 36 Chanel lipsticks and some perfume from a business at Gordon and Clair on Sunday evening. One is described as 160 lbs, medium build, black hair, approximately 30 years of age, wearing a white sweater with black stripes, a green vest, and Khaki pants, and the other is described as 140 lbs, thin build, black hair, approximately 30 years of age, wearing a black sweater, black vest, blue jeans, and black shoes. A 2009 white Toyota Camry was stolen from the driveway of a south-end residence sometime between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. In the backseat were two Diono brand children’s car seats. Police are looking for two people that took a pricey Gibson Les Paul Supreme guitar worth $5,200 from a business near Woodlawn and Arrow on June 5. The suspects were described as white males with medium builds. One had greying hair, tattoos on both arms and was wearing a black t-shirt, jeans and black shoes. The second had a goatee and was wearing a blue t-shirt, camo shorts, black shoes and a black and white Nike hat. They were possibly driving a dark grey Honda Civic. Police are looking for someone that went into on Eramosa Road business last Saturday and stole 14 packs of Native deodorant worth about $460. The suspect is described as male, tanned skin, mid-40s to early 50s, 6’1” with short black salt and pepper hair and facial hair. He was wearing baggy clothes and drove off in a white Ford Explorer. Police are investigating after the attempted thefts of two different Toyota Tundra pickup trucks in the area of Pin Ridge and Farley early Tuesday morning. Both trucks had a smashed back window and damage to the dashboard. Police are looking for two male suspects described as thin and wearing light-coloured track suits with hoods. An employee stopped an attempted robbery at a business near Gordon and Kortright last Friday. She had arrived at work and as she entered the back door two males in balaclavas ran towards her. She was able to close and lock the door, denying them entry. Both males were described as having tanned skin and small builds. One was wearing a black Adidas coat, black pants, white shoes, black gloves and carrying a green reusable Dollarama bag. The second was wearing a black coat, black pants, black shoes with white soles and black gloves. They were driving a silver Honda CRV with front-end damage which had previously been reported stolen from Mississauga. Two 55-year-old women were charged with possession of stolen property, and one of them was also charged with possession of a schedule 1 substance. Also, a 35-year-old woman was charged with two counts of theft under $5,000, possession of stolen property. All three were charged in connection to a pair of thefts in the area of Speedvale and Stevenson on Thursday.


A 30-year-old male and two 37-year-old were charged with two counts of theft under $5,000 and possession of stolen property obtained by crime in connection to a theft from a south end business Wednesday evening. Police tracked the trio in a black Honda Civic and arrested them, recovering nearly $500 in stolen merchandise from two different stores.

Other Notes

A man arrested last week for causing $30,000 in damage to a rental unit was arrested again for a second count of mischief over $5,000 and breaching a probation order on Tuesday. He left the water running in the kitchen and bathroom, causing a leak which created significant damage to the shared laundry room below the unit. The new damage is estimated to be in excess of $10,000.
