POLICE NOTES: Splash Pad Incident, Stabbing Suspects, and Ripped Off Safe

There are 145,000 stories in the Royal City, and this is some of them. Looking at a week’s worth of media releases from the Guelph Police Service, there’s a lot going on in our little city crime-wise speaking, so let’s run down some of the charges, issues, and requests for information from the Guelph Police Service over the last seven days.

Assault

On Sunday night at round 9:20 pm, two men attacked a 25-year-old man after he went outside his home near Eramosa and Speedvale to speak to them. He sustained lacerations to his abdomen and arm and was transported to a Hamilton trauma centre. He has since been treated and released. Police believe the incident was targeted and a knife was recovered at the scene. One of the males was described as 5’9” with a heavy build and wearing a brown t-shirt. The second was wearing a hoody and sunglasses. They left the scene in the newer model grey, four-door Dodge Charger below. A 60-year-old Guelph man was charged with assault police, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, mischief under $5,000 and several counts of breaching a probation order. Police were called to London and Woolwich on Wednesday night to reports of a man yelling and throwing things. When police found him he had steel pipes in each hand, and he bit an officer in the leg after being taken into custody.


A 38-year-old Guelph man was charged with assault with a weapon, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, mischief under $5,000, breaching probation and two counts of possessing a controlled substance. After two men got into an altercation outside a business at Gordon and Wellington, one man was followed by another into a parking lot and was punched in the face and body at least four times. Police found a knife at the scene and suspected fentanyl and crystal meth on the suspect.


A 27-year-old Guelph man was charged with assault and public intoxication. A customer was unhappy with his order last Saturday night at a restaurant near Stone and Edinburgh and began arguing with the manager. He eventually pushed the manager twice and emptied a garbage can on the counter.


A 45-year-old Guelph man is charged with assault causing bodily harm, assault with a weapon, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose and theft under $5,000 after a staff member at a social services agency was attacked last Sunday. A former client who is banned from the facility was confronted by the staff member when the suspect picked up a metal pipe and repeatedly struck the employee in the torso, arms, legs and head. The victim was transported to hospital for treatment of his injuries.

Break-Ins

A large quantity of tools with an estimated value of $7,000 to $8,000 were removed from a construction site near Starwood and Watson last weekend. If you have any information, call Constable Cecilia Hudecki at 519-824-1212, ext. 7215, email her at chudecki [at] guelphpolice.ca.


At 3:45 am Sunday a resident of Ambrous Crescent was awakened by the sound of his garage opening. He went downstairs and looked outside to see an unknown male looking back in the same set of windows. Two men wearing all black clothes and black face coverings fled the area in a grey Mercedes SUV. It seems they gained entry to the garage by removing the electric door opener from one of the vehicles in the driveway. Police were called to a bank near Silvercreek and Willow at 5 am last Saturday morning after a safe containing an unknown quantity of cash inside an ATM had been forcefully removed from its cement enclosure, and the suspects also obscured  security camera with black spray paint. Surveillance video from another nearby business showed a person on foot approaching the ATM approximately 3 a.m. and a short time later sparks are seen in the area. Impaired Driving

A 51-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired driving, and his licence was suspended for 90 days on Thursday nigh after failing to use a turn signal and refusing to move to the right for an ambulance flashing its emergency lights.

Theft

A white coloured Monster Emo ebike with camouflage paint and a picture of a white dog on the battery compartment was taken sometime overnight between Tuesday and Wednesday from an address near Woolwich and Speedvale. Last Saturday, a woman in her 80s had nearly $2,600 charged to her cards after her wallet was stolen while she was shopping at a Stone Road business. Video surveillance showed a man standing close to the victim while she entered her PIN. He then followed her from the store and removed her wallet while she was loading her purchases into her car. A 36-year-old Brantford man was arrested and charged with possessing stolen property over $5,000, being an occupant of a stolen vehicle and breaching a probation order after DNA connected him to the December 2022 theft of a pick-up truck from an east end neighbourhood.


A 33-year-old Guelph man was arrested Monday and charged with theft over $5,000. Actually, it was closer to $18,000. Between December and May, the man worked in the hot food section of a grocery store and was observed stealing or giving away cooked chicken to customers and friends and taking product home without paying for it.


A 28-year-old Guelph man was charged with robbery and four counts of failing to comply with probation for stealing several items from a store near Gordon and Wellington after he was told by the clerk that his lottery ticket was not a winner.

Traffic

The Traffic Unit is seeking witnesses after a cyclist was struck Monday evening. At 5:30 pm, a man was riding his bike along Imperial North when he was struck by a maroon SUV which was exiting the West End Community Centre. The driver of the SUV stopped to check on the cyclist and then left the area. An 18-year-old Guelph man and 17-year-old Guelph boy turned themselves in to police this week and were each charged with obstructing police, flight from police, dangerous driving, careless driving and driving without insurance after giving fave names to police and driving away recklessly on their dirt bikes in an incident last month.

Other Notes

Police are investigating after a man was seen recording two girls approximately 13 or 14 at the splash pad in Norm Jary Park around 3:30 pm on Wednesday. A witness confronted the man who said that he was filming the splash pad and not the girls, but the man appeared to be filming the girls while talking to them. He was described as a white male in his mid-30s, six feet tall with short black hair. He was wearing a mostly-white tie-died spotted tee-shirt, grey and black ball cap with the word Lubricants on it and a dark-coloured backpack. A 41-year-old Guelph woman was arrested for attempting to disarm a police officer after midnight on Thursday when she made a grab for an officer’s sidearm while waiting for assessment at Guelph General Hospital.


A 24-year-old Guelph man was arrested for mischief over $5,000 after doing $30,000 in damage to a rental apartment near Woolwich and Norfolk. There were many holes in walls, spray paint on almost every wall, cupboards smashed to pieces and appliances damaged and rendered inoperable.


A 33-year-old Guelph man was located downtown Monday and arrested for three counts of criminal harassment and two counts of breaching release orders for several incidents were he had followed or chased young women.
