POLICE NOTES: Bar Fight, South End Break-Ins, and a Bad Bus Ride

There are 145,000 stories in the Royal City, and this is some of them. Looking at a week’s worth of media releases from the Guelph Police Service, there’s a lot going on in our little city crime-wise speaking, so let’s run down some of the charges, issues, and requests for information from the Guelph Police Service over the last seven days.

Assault

A 19-year-old Guelph man was charged with careless use of a weapon, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, discharging an air gun with intent and mischief under $5,000 on Wednesday after a van drove by a house near Hanlon Road and College and fired several rounds from a BB gun. No injuries were reported and the victim does not know the involved parties. A 19-year-old Milton woman is wanted on the same charges.


A 15-year-old Guelph boy was arrested for assault with a weapon on Sunday for an incident last month at Stone Road Mall where he got into a dispute with an employee in the food court and then used a racial slur before throwing a plastic tray and other items at the victim.


A 20-year-old Georgetown man was arrested for aggravated assault and assault at a north end bar last Saturday night where a 21-year-old Mississauga man was struck in the face and knocked unconscious. He was transported to hospital for treatment of serious head and facial injuries. A second man sustained minor facial injuries.

Break-Ins

Four south-end homes were entered while unoccupied over the weekend. At approximately 10:30 pm last Saturday, a resident near Gosling and Clair arrived home to find the front door had been kicked open. Clothing and a laptop were reported missing. A homeowner on Clairfields also came home to find the front door forced open and found jewelry missing that same night. Then, on Sunday evening, police were called to a home near Victoria and Bard where the front door had been forced open and a laptop and tablet were stolen. Later that night police headed back to Clairfields were the front door was damaged and several drawers were rummaged through but nothing was reported missing. It is not known if the incidents are related, but if you have any information call 519-824-1212.


On Tuesday evening, police went to a home near Victoria and Summerfield where someone broke in through the patio door earlier that day. Several drawers and cupboards ransacked, and it is believed some artwork was stolen but the homeowner has not yet provided a list of missing items. Fraud

Guelph Police are investigating after a woman lost approximately $40,000 in a bank fraud. On Sunday, she received an email supposedly from her bank asking her to click on the link and read a “secure message”. She clicked on the link and provided her log-in information, however a short time later she received messages from her actual bank saying that her accounts had been emptied and she was locked out of her accounts. The incident remains under investigation.


This week, a man in his 90s reported that he was contacted by someone he believed was from his bank as the bank’s toll free number was on the call display. During the lengthy call, he was told his debit and credit cards had been compromised and that a courier would attend his address and collect them. Afterward, the victim realized his cards had been used to make $2,500 in cash withdrawals and almost $17,000 in purchases in Waterloo Region. On Monday, police were contacted by a woman in her 70s who said that she sent $2,980 in an e-transfer after getting a text from someone claiming to be her son asking for money to help pay for repairs to a car after an accident. She sent another $2,021 the next day before discovering her son was not behind the texts. Impaired Driving

A 35-year-old Kitchener man was charged with impaired driving early on Thursday after an officer patrolling on Silvercreek Parkway North spotted a running car parked diagonally across multiple parking spots. Testing revealed that the driver had twice the legal amount of alcohol in his system.


A 35-year-old Guelph man was charged with refusing to provide a sample and dangerous driving on Wednesday evening after police received complaints about the driver of a white Mini cutting off other cars, passing in turning lanes and following other cars while gesturing at the drivers.


A 37-year-old Ariss woman was charged with impaired driving on Monday afternoon after she was found passed out in a running vehicle at the side of the road near Woodlawn and Dawson. She had three times the legal limit of alcohol in her system.


A 52-year-old Guelph man was charged with impaired driving and dangerous driving on Sunday after a two-vehicle collision at Kortright and Edinburgh. No injuries were reported, but one of the people involved had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system.

Theft

A 33-year-old Guelph man was arrested for robbery Sunday after trying to leave a store on Eramosa Road without paying for several items. The suspect dropped the items when confronted, but then assaulted the employee by grabbing his arm causing minor injuries.

Theft (Auto)

On Wednesday night, suspects arrived at a Woodlawn West dealership in a black SUV believed to be a Cadillac Escalade and stole a red 2006 GMC Sierra pickup. Both vehicles drove to another dealership, where the black SUV was used to ram open the metal gate and a black 2013 Chevrolet Suburban was stolen. Then, on Thursday morning, a resident near Clair and Victoria reported his black 2025 Lincoln Navigator was stolen from his driveway overnight, but it’s not sure if that one’s related. A 42-year-old Guelph man was charged with possessing stolen property over $5,000, possessing a counterfeit licence plate, break and enter, wearing a disguise while committing an offence and failing to attend court after the Break Enter Auto Theft Unit located a 2019 Ford F150 in a parking lot on Fife Road. He was also wanted for for stealing mail and packages from a west end apartment building last Christmas Day.

Traffic

A 45-year-old Burlington man was charged with fail to remain, careless driving, possessing a controlled substance, two counts of failing to comply with a release order, driving while suspended, driving without insurance and driving a vehicle without a permit on Wednesday. The inciting incident happened earlier this month with a collision in a parking lot on Speedvale West where one of the parties fled the scene. This week, he returned to the scene of the crime, and when stopped by officers a search revealed a quantity of suspected morphine pills in an unmarked bottle. On both occasions he was in the company of a woman with whom he had been ordered to have no contact.


A 35-year-old Guelph man was charged with theft of motor vehicle, dangerous driving, four counts of driving while prohibited and two counts of breaching a probation order after a car stolen from a Guelph dealership was later caught travelling 151 kilometres per hour between Guelph and Fergus.

Other Notes

Just before 11 pm, a woman called police to report an indecent act she had just observed on a bus driving towards downtown from the west end. She said a man sitting at the back of the bus had exposed himself and was masturbating while looking around. He was described as approximately 20 with brown skin and black hair. He was wearing a black quarter-zip sweater over a white t-shirt, dark pants and black running shoes.
