POLICE NOTES: New Year’s Fights, Truck Theft Fail and Power of Attorney Fraud

There are 145,000 stories in the Royal City, and this is some of them. Looking at a week’s worth of media releases from the Guelph Police Service, there’s a lot going on in our little city crime-wise speaking, so let’s run down some of the charges, issues, and requests for information from the Guelph Police Service over the last seven days.

Attempted Murder

On December 21, police officers were called to an address near Edinburgh and London, where a woman in her 60s reported being assaulted and strangled. She was transported to hospital for medical treatment. Following investigation, her 39-year-old son was arrested for attempted murder, assault with a weapon, two counts of assault causing bodily harm, assault and breaching a probation order.

Assault

A 30-year-old Guelph man was charged with three counts of assault, assault with a weapon and possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose early New Year’s Day. Two women were approached by a man not known to them outside a bar on Macdonell, and he started making rude comments about their clothing. When the women asked him to stop, the man pushed one woman to the ground and spat on the other. When a crowd surrounded him, he pulled a knife and waved it around but eventually he was disarmed and police were called.


A 28-year-old Guelph man was also charged with assault, resisting arrest and public intoxication at the same time New Year’s Day. Patrons of a nearby bar approached police about a man who had punched a staff member in the face when they tried to remove him for repeatedly drinking another person’s glass. As officers attempted to arrest him for public intoxication, he began to physically resist and would not comply with demands. During the arrest the man spat blood in the face of an officer.


A 45-year-old Guelph woman was charged with assault police with a weapon and possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose on Thursday after a wellbeing check on a woman living near Dawson and Shelldale. The woman answered the door holding a black pistol, which she pointed at the officers. They shoved the door, knocking the woman down, and were able to disarm her. The weapon was later found to be a BB gun.

Break-Ins

Just after 4 am on Tuesday, officers responded to an alarm call at a business near Gordon and Lowes and found the front window smashed out. It is not known if anything was stolen. Security video showed two men attending the business, including one in a beige winter coat and full-face mask. A 37-year-old Guelph man was charged with break and enter and theft under $5,000 on Boxing Day after a resident of Fountain Street East discovered a stranger inside his unit. The man had entered through an unlocked side door. The suspect was arrested with the victims wallet.

Impaired Driving

A 45-year-old Guelph man was charged with impaired driving, taking a vehicle without consent, failing to attend court and several Highway Traffic Act charges on Tuesday afternoon after a collision near Willow and Edinburgh. One of the drivers involved failed a roadside breath test, and was also wanted for several outstanding charges, including impaired driving and dangerous driving.


A 37-year-old Guelph man was charged with impaired driving, careless driving and assault causing bodily harm after police were called to an apartment building on Willow Road last Saturday.  A man was sitting in his vehicle in the parking lot with friends when another person reversed and struck the car. Then an argument turned into assault when the victim’s neck was grabbed and squeezed. Police observed open containers of beer inside the vehicle, and he had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system.


An 18-year-old Puslinch woman was arrested for impaired driving after police were called to a collision on the morning of Christmas Eve. A woman lost control of her car at Norwich and  Mitchell, striking a snowbank and causing significant damage to the car. The driver was arrested for impaired driving and novice driver having alcohol in her system.

Theft

In late November, a Guelph woman in her 70s reported her cards had been compromised after she received messages from her bank about unusual transactions. Her debit card was used to withdraw $3,500 cash while her Visa card was used at a south-end LCBO to buy two bottles of Chateau Margaux wine valued at $2,100 each.  Anyone with information or who recognizes the man in the below photos is asked to call Constable Layne Beaver at 519-824-1212, ext. 7607, or email lbeaver [at] guelphpolice.ca.


On Tuesday, a 73-year-old Guelph man was arrested for theft over $5,000, possessing proceeds of crime over $5,000 and theft by person holding power of attorney for crimes going back to the summer of 2024. Allegations arose that he was abusing his power of attorney to steal from the victim, who is in his 90s, however the victim did not want to pursue charges. The suspect was accessing the victim’s bank account, transferring nearly $14,000 from that account into his own.

Theft (Auto)

At approximately 8:20 pm on Wednesday, a grey 2017 Toyota Camry was stolen from a gym on Eramosa Road. A man entered the business, went to the change room area and stole the victim’s bag. Gym staff believe the same male has been responsible for several similar vehicle thefts in other jurisdictions. Just after 5 pm on Monday,  police were contacted by a Cambridge business who said that their trailer which had been stolen 30 minutes earlier and tracked to Guelph. Officers went to Southgate Drive and observed a man exiting the truck which was attached to the trailer. He got into a dark-coloured sedan, which quickly left the area. Investigation revealed the truck had been reported stolen December 1 and had a licence plate attached which had previously been reported missing. The driver was described as possibly Indian, 5’9” and wearing dark clothing with a scarf over his face. Last Saturday police were called to a business near Woodlawn and Arrow where, at around 4 am on Friday, three men entered the property and drilled out the locks on two trucks and several trailers. They also moved one of the trucks and attempted unsuccessfully to connect it to a trailer. Eventually the suspects left on foot. It is not known if anything was stolen and no damage estimate is yet available. Other Notes

At approximately 9:35 am on Monday, officers on foot patrol entered the lobby of a building on Carden Street and a man known to the officers appeared to notice them and leave the building. Investigation revealed that he was wanted by another police service for charges including theft, mischief and failing to appear in court. A short time later the man was located in the area and arrested on the warrants.


A 37-year-old Guelph woman was charged with two counts each of theft under $5,000 and breach of probation as well as failing to attend court on Sunday morning after a police patrol pulled into the parking lot of an apartment building near Woolwich and Speedvale. When the car stopped, a woman standing in front of the building fled and took the officers on a foot chase through several backyards. She was wanted on three different warrants.


Last weekend, emergency services were called to the West Parkade on Macdonell Street for a vehicle on fire. The 2015 Toyota was destroyed and another Toyota parked next to it sustained significant damage. The investigation is ongoing but the fire is not believed to be suspicious.
