POLICE NOTES: Missing Wire, Burned Out Car, and Fake Gun Over Fake iPhone

There are 145,000 stories in the Royal City, and this is some of them. Looking at a week’s worth of media releases from the Guelph Police Service, there’s a lot going on in our little city crime-wise speaking, so let’s run down some of the charges, issues, and requests for information from the Guelph Police Service over the last seven days.

Assault

Just after noon on Thursday, police received several calls about a man with a possible firearm in the parking lot of a business on Clair Road West. Police arrested a man who explained that he had gone there to meeting someone selling an iPhone 17 and his girlfriend, but we refused to go through with the purchase when he discovered the phone was fake. Then the seller pulled a gun. The victim said he was able to disarm the seller before realizing it was actually a pellet gun. He threw it on the ground and left the area in his car. He was released without charges. A 21-year-old man told police he was assaulted by multiple people at around 1:30 am last Friday morning while on Macdonell Street. The man was inside a restaurant and became involved in a verbal argument with several other men and then he was followed outside by those men who assaulted him and gave him minor injuries. A 14-year-old Guelph boy was charged with assault on Tuesday after a disturbance near Scottsdale and Ironwood where a 14-year-old girl had been punched in the face and dragged before a witness intervened and ended the altercation. She was assessed by paramedics on scene.


A 21-year-old Guelph woman was charged with three counts of assault police and mischief under $5,000 early Friday morning after police were called to an address on Fife Road. Officers located a woman who had damaged her neighbour’s door, and while being walked to the cruiser, the woman kicked an officer in the shin. She was placed in the cruiser, but kicked the same officer twice in the torso and spat on his cheek.


A 27-year-old Guelph woman was charged with assault on Wednesday afternoon after a woman in medical distress at an address near Woolwich and Speedvale became uncooperative and spat in the paramedic’s face.

Break-Ins

At approximately 4:40 am on Thursday, police were dispatched to a reported break-in at a business near Victoria and Grange. Two men were captured on security video inside the store, with one of them carrying a duffel bag that appeared full. Tools including a drill and a wrench set and a number of packages of butane were reported missing. The suspects were described as two white males with their faces covered. One was wearing a black hoodie with Max Solutions on the back, a grey shirt underneath, black pants and brown boots. The second was wearing a black hoodie with white markings, black pants and black and white running shoes. They were last seen southbound towards Elizabeth Street. A 33-year-old Guelph man was arrested Sunday night after a resident of an east-end home reported that someone had smashed a kitchen window and entered the residence. He was charged with break and enter, possession of a break-in instrument, and carrying a concealed weapon.

Fraud

On Tuesday evening, a Guelph woman reported that her 80-something mother had been defrauded by someone claiming to be from Rogers who offered a reduced rate for services. During the call the victim provided her bank card numbers and PINs. A few hours later the victim received a call from someone claiming to be from TD instructing her that her bank card had been compromised. Arrangements were made for someone to attend the victim’s residence and collect her debit and credit cards and after the man left the victim’s debit card had been used to withdrawn more than $14,900 in a series of transactions. The investigation is ongoing.


On Monday morning, an 18-year-old University of Guelph student called police to report he was being extorted by an unknown individual. The man had been involved in an online chat, during which he shared explicit images and videos. He then received messages threatening to share the content with his friends and family.. The caller stated he believed some of the content had been shared through several Instagram accounts. Residents are reminded not to share personal details or intimate images online, as these can be captured and used in the commission of crimes.

Impaired Driving

A 54-year-old Guelph man was charged with impaired driving and dangerous driving on Thursday afternoon after emergency services were called to an address on Stevenson Street North. The driver of a black Ram pickup had lost control, leaving the road and slamming into a house. The truck had to be pulled out of the house but no injuries were reported by anyone in the home or the driver of the truck, who had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system at the time of the crash.


A 63-year-old Puslinch man was charged with impaired driving on Wednesday morning after a man who appeared to be intoxicated tried to buy alcohol at a business near Gordon and Clair. The manager warned the man that if he left in his truck, the police would be called, and that’s what happened. Officers located the truck on Arkell Road, pulled it over, and tests revealed he had more than twice the legal limit of alcohol in his system.

Theft

Four people were arrested in Toronto this week for four commercial break-ins in Guelph, including two jewelry stores, in Guelph earlier this summer. The two jewelry store robberies alone netted nearly $70,000 in stolen goods, some of which were recovered by when the Break Enter Auto Theft Unit executed search warrants at three addresses in Toronto on Tuesday (see above). Of the four attested, two were arrested for the robberies and two were arrested for trying to help them evade police:

  • A 34-year-old Toronto man is charged with three counts of break and enter, possessing stolen property over $5,000, trafficking stolen property, disguise with intent, occupying a stolen vehicle and two counts of failing to comply with a release order
  • A 31-year-old Toronto man is charged with four counts of break and enter, possessing stolen property over $5,000, two counts of disguise with intent, occupying a stolen vehicle, possessing stolen property under $5,000 and breaching a probation order
  • A 24-year-old Toronto woman is wanted for obstructing police and trafficking stolen property
  • A 70-year-old Toronto man is charged with obstructing police

Just after 7 am on Thursday police were dispatched to a business on Southgate Drive after staff found a door been propped open with a heavy spool of wire. Investigation revealed suspects had gained entry through a hatch on the roof and climbed down ropes to enter the business. Several spools of copper wire and bundles of copper strips were stolen worth an estimated $40,000 or more. On Monday. a 43-year-old Guelph man was arrested for theft under $5,000, uttering threats and breaching a probation order for an incident last month at a Woodlawn West store where an employee was threatened with mace after a suspect was seen concealing items in his backpack.

Theft (Auto)

On Monday afternoon, the Ontario Provincial Police reported finding a vehicle stolen from Guelph destroyed by fire in a field in Springwater Township. It had been stolen earlier this month while the owner, who lives in the London area, was visiting a friend in the east end of Guelph. Traffic

A 25-year-old Guelph man was charged with careless driving on Wednesday evening after a parked vehicle was struck near Watson and Davison. The suspect vehicle left the road and hit a utility box as well.
