POLICE NOTES: Backpacker Busted, Father/Son Scofflaws and Candy Creep

There are 145,000 stories in the Royal City, and this is some of them. Looking at a week’s worth of media releases from the Guelph Police Service, there’s a lot going on in our little city crime-wise speaking, so let’s run down some of the charges, issues, and requests for information from the Guelph Police Service over the last seven days.

Assault

A 27-year-old Guelph man faces several weapons charges after an incident last week where officers on patrol near Woolwich and Speedvale saw a man with red backpack fleeing. They found the backpack, which had an unloaded shotgun and canister of bear spray inside. On Friday afternoon the suspect was located and arrested.

Break-Ins

On Monday morning police were called to a business near Silvercreek and Woodlawn after the owner arrived to find a rear overhead door damaged. It appeared that a vehicle was used in an attempt to push in the door, but a fridge and heavy table had been against the inside of the door so it’s believed that no entry was gained. While officers were on scene they were approached by an employee of a neighbouring business who reported hearing loud banging noises from the rear of the businesses at approximately 6 am. On Sunday morning, a resident near Callander and Sherwood called police after arriving home to discover the break-in and that the bedroom was ransacked. It turned out that a quantity of jewelry was stolen. The home’s security camera caught three men leaving through the front door just after 7 pm Saturday, the broke in by smashing a window in the sunroom. They waited on the porch for a few seconds before running to a vehicle that stopped in front of the house. The three suspects were all wearing light-coloured sweaters and pants, dark shoes, gloves and face masks. They fled in a dark-coloured four-door sedan. On Wednesday morning police were contacted by the manager of a business near York and Ontario. One of their buildings was broken into sometime in the past week and a small amount of wire was missing. A 24-year-old Guelph man was charged with two counts each of break and enter, disguise with intent and trespassing at night as well as possessing break-in tools and possessing a controlled substance for a couple of break-ins at downtown-area homes last month. On Wednesday night, the suspect was located at a west-end business and arrested by the Break Enter Auto Theft Unit. A small amount of suspected fentanyl was located during the arrest.

Impaired Driving

A 41-year-old Guelph man was charged with impaired operation, refusing to comply with a demand, possessing a controlled substance, two counts of breaching a probation order and several Highway Traffic Act offences on Thursday morning. A patrol got a hit about a suspended driver from the automated licence plate reader and they conducted a traffic stop. The driver had trouble focusing on the conversation and officers noticed a used glass pipe in the centre console. During a search, officers recovered a quantity of suspected crystal meth and three more contaminated pipes.


A 45-year-old Guelph woman is charged with impaired operation and failing to comply with a breath demand on Wednesday afternoon after an intoxicated person refused to leave a business on Silvercreek North. They reported she had driven to the business and her vehicle was parked outside, and when she was transported to the police station, she repeatedly refused to provide a breath sample.


A 19-year-old Waterloo man was charged with impaired driving, driving while suspended, driving with open alcohol and driving while using a handheld device after an officer on patrol near Gordon and Gosling when she observed a driver using a cellphone and swerving towards oncoming traffic. Investigation revealed the same driver had his licence suspended for three days after he registered a “Warn” on a roadside breath test less than five hours earlier.


A 24-year-old Guelph man was charged with impaired driving on Sunday evening after police were called to a plaza near Gordon and Kortright about a possible impaired driver. Officers arrived as the male left a business carrying a case of beer. He had an odour of alcohol on his breath and failed a roadside breath test.


A 27-year-old Guelph man was arrested for failing to provide a breath sample, dangerous driving, failing to stop at a collision, driving without insurance, driving with open alcohol and having alcohol in his system as a novice driver after a hit-and-run collision at London and Woolwich last Friday night. A witness said both involved vehicles drove north on Woolwich, with the suspect vehicle swerving onto the sidewalk and into oncoming traffic. A number of children were observed trick-or-treating in the area.

Theft

Just after 7 pm on Thursday a man entered a business near Speedvale and Woolwich, placed items in his pockets and started to walk out. The manager followed the suspect outside and was punched in the face. The pair began wrestling before being separated. The suspect said he had a weapon but none was seen. During the physical struggle the stolen property fell from his pockets and was recovered. The victim was not injured. Officers reviewed security video and were able to identify the suspect, who was not located. The investigation is ongoing.


On Wednesday a 28-year-old Kitchener man was arrested for theft under $5,000 after a delivery driver stole a package from an east-end condo building last month.

Theft (Auto)

Shortly after noon on Tuesday, police were dispatched to Southgate Drive after an employee of a Brampton company reported that one of their trucks had been stolen and its GPS was showing that it was in Guelph. The white 2025 Volvo was located, but the OBD port had been pulled out and some wiring was damaged. The truck was still drivable and was collected from the scene by the owner. The investigation is ongoing.

Traffic

A 22-year-old Port Dover man has been charged with careless driving and failing to remain at a collision after a collision on Monday where 17-year-old woman was struck while crossing the street at Harvard and Gordon.


A 45-year-old Guelph man was charged with driving while prohibited on Saturday afternoon after a police patrol picked up a Toyota associated with a prohibited driver. They followed the Toyota and another car to an address near Ironwood and Edinburgh, and discovered the two drivers were father and son. The father was identified as a prohibited driver, but he had been driving his son’s CRV, which will now be seized for 45 days.


A 19-year-old Guelph man faces several charges including dangerous driving, flight from police, two counts of breaching a release order, failing to stop after an accident and stunt driving on Monday night. A vehicle lost control and entered a ditch and striking a hydro pole near Woodlawn and Imperial. Three passengers in the vehicle were assessed for minor injuries. Investigation revealed the driver is on a number of court-ordered bail conditions, including house arrest and an order not to associate with a woman who was also in the car at the time.

Other Notes

On Saturday afternoon at the West End Recreation Centre, a seven-year-old girl told here mother that she was playing with a younger child when a man approached and offered them candy to go with him. The mother confronted the man and he denied speaking to the children and quickly left the area. He was described as 16 to 18 years old with a thin build and dark short hair and was wearing a red hoodie and dark pants. A parent from the visiting team later said her daughter had reported a similar interaction with the man. At approximately 1:42 am on Sunday, a resident at Woodlawn and Montana discovered their Mazda SUV was located fully engulfed by fire. The vehicle was destroyed and the house sustained minor heat damage. The fire is considered suspicious. A person described as having a medium build and wearing a puffy jacket with the hood up, a baseball cap and possibly a face mask was seen on video near the car before the fire. A 45-year-old Guelph man was arrested for mischief under $5,000 last Friday morning after a man punched a large dent in the door of a police cruiser after asking officers for directions to the nearest ATM.
