POLICE NOTES: Teenagers Followed, 3 Busted for Home Invasion, and Excessive Mischief

There are 145,000 stories in the Royal City, and this is some of them. Looking at a week’s worth of media releases from the Guelph Police Service, there’s a lot going on in our little city crime-wise speaking, so let’s run down some of the charges, issues, and requests for information from the Guelph Police Service over the last seven days.

Assault

A 35-year-old Guelph woman was arrested for break and enter, robbery, assault with a weapon and administering a noxious substance after a resident early Sunday morning was dragged out of bed, sprayed with bear spray and robbed of his wallet and a diamond ring. The intruders also claimed to have a gun but none was seen. Two other suspects were arrested over the following the days. On Tuesday, a 31-year-old Guelph man is charged with two counts each of robbery and assault with a weapon, break and enter, administer a noxious substance, mischief under $5,000, possession for the purpose of trafficking and possessing stolen property. A 40-year-old Guelph man was arrested on the same charges on Wednesday.


A 15-year-old Guelph boy was arrested Wednesday morning and charged with assault causing bodily harm, assault and mischief under $5,000 for an incident last week where several teens assaulted another. They kicked him repeatedly in the head and torso, causing a chipped tooth and other injuries, tore his hoodie and stole his vape. The investigation is ongoing.


A 54-year-old Guelph woman was charged with assault police with a weapon, assault police and public intoxication early last Saturday after a woman was being belligerent and aggressive towards staff at a downtown bar. While being assessed by paramedics she repeatedly pushed one of the officers and then pulled the hand-held microphone from the officer’s vest and struck him with it, causing a cut above his eye. She was arrested and while being handcuffed kicked a second officer in the leg.

Break-Ins

On Thursday morning, a resident near Grange and Metcalfe reported that someone tried to enter her garage and home just after midnight, causing damage to the screens of the garage. No entry was gained. The suspect was described as a male wearing all black except for a red toque and white running shoes. At 2:35 am Sunday police were called to a business near Grange and Victoria after the owner received a call from his security company. Video showed a male wearing a hoodie and a face covering gaining entry to the business and then forcing open an office door. A tablet computer was stolen. Approximately 20 minutes later, police were called to a business at Woodlawn and Michener. A window at the front of the business had been smashed and officers found a hammer left behind. Several thousand dollars in Pokemon cards were stolen. Then, at 2:45 am on Monday, police attended a business near Edinburgh and Municipal. Two suspects were seen on video gaining entry through a rear door before ransacking the cash register area. Drugs

Fraud

Impaired Driving

A 59-year-old Guelph man was charged with impaired driving and dangerous driving last Friday evening after police were called to Silvercreek and Willow after a car stopped at a red light was hit from behind. The suspect had more than twice the legal limit of alcohol in his system.

Theft

A 26-year-old Guelph man was charged with two counts of theft under $5,000, obstructing police and breaching a probation order after a man had entered a vehicle and stole cash at a plaza near Edinburgh and Stone. The owner of the vehicle saw this and he and other witnesses detained the suspect, who was arrested with approximately $270 in clothing stolen a short time earlier from a store in Stone Road Mall.

Theft (Auto)

A 30-year-old Hamilton woman was charged with possessing stolen property over $5,000 on Thursday evening when police were notified of a suspicious vehicle in a Speedvale Avenue West parking lot. Investigation revealed the truck had been reported stolen from Hamilton, and a woman was located lying in the backseat with the vehicle’s keys and arrested.


A 57-year-old Kitchener man has been arrested and charged with possessing stolen property over $5,000, possessing counterfeit money, four counts of possessing a weapon while prohibited and 10 counts of driving while prohibited in connection to a stolen vehicle investigation late last month.

Traffic

Just before 9 pm on Thursday night, police responded to a collision involving a motorcycle with two occupants that had been travelling westbound on Speedvale Avenue at Metcalfe Street, and a red SUV travelling eastbound on Speedvale. A 32-year-old Guelph man was pronounced deceased at the scene. A 39-year-old Guelph woman suffered life-altering injuries and was transported to a Hamilton trauma centre.  The 81-year-old driver of the SUV, also a Guelph resident, was treated in hospital for minor injuries. A 39-year-old Kitchener man was charged with speeding and stunt driving on Wednesday after a speed enforcement at Wellington and Imperial where a Volkswagen was clocked travelling at 102 kilometres per hour in a 60 zone.


Also on Wednesday, an officer patrolling near College and the Hanlon Expressway clocked a Buick travelling at 107 kilometres per hour in a 60 zone. A 62-year-old Guelph woman was charged with speeding and stunt driving.


A 28-year-old Guelph man was charged with careless driving after a car crashed into a business ear Eramosa and Stevenson last Friday night. A cleaner working inside was not injured. Damage to the business is estimated at between $5,000 to $10,000.

Other Notes

Shortly before 7 pm on Tuesday, a 15-year-old girl reported that she was walking with a friend when they noticed a man who appeared to be following them. The man got closer and said he wanted to talk to them and made a “disturbing comment”. The girl ran home and called police and the man kept walking. He was described as black, 18-25 years, short with full facial hair and very large eyes and spoke with an accent. On Thursday afternoon, a 50-year-old Guelph man was arrested for three counts of mischief under $5,000 and two counts of breaching a probation order. He was held for a bail hearing Friday after several locations downtown were tagged with graffiti on Tuesday. Costs to remove the paint are estimated to be in excess of $1,000.
