There are 145,000 stories in the Royal City, and this is some of them. Looking at a week’s worth of media releases from the Guelph Police Service, there’s a lot going on in our little city crime-wise speaking, so let’s run down some of the charges, issues, and requests for information from the Guelph Police Service over the last seven days.

Assault
A 21-year-old Guelph woman was charged with being a party to aggravated assault, robbery and mischief to data in addition to an original arrest for failing to comply with a bail order and breaching a conditional sentence. This is in connection to an incident earlier this month where an argument broke out between two men who had not met before in a north end apartment. The argument became physical and one of the men sustained an injury to his leg. A 24-year-old Guelph man was earlier charged with aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose and five counts of breaching probation orders.
An 18-year-old Guelph man, 17-year-old Guelph girl and 16-year-old Guelph boy are all charged with assault causing bodily harm. The 16-year-old is also charged with theft under $5,000. The 15-year-old girl who arranged the meet-up is charged with being a party to assault causing bodily harm. Last Friday, an 18-year-old man was lured to Exhibition Park to meet with a woman, but when he arrived he was beaten up by three other people and had his watch stolen. The parties are all known to each other.
Break-Ins
At approximately 1:40 am on Wednesday August 13, officers were dispatched to a business in the area of Stevenson and Speedvale about a break and enter in progress. Officers arrived on scene quickly to find the suspects no longer on scene, but review of CCTV footage showed that a black Range Rover SUV pulled up to the business and two men exited the vehicle, one with a sledgehammer. They made two trips inside the business taking armfuls of merchandise with them. The items taken are described as gold solder, jewelry fittings, assorted hardware, and a box of samples worth approximately $7,700. The suspects are described as:
- White male wearing an orange construction vest, a white T-shirt and denim shorts and carrying a sledgehammer
- Male, wearing all black clothing with white accents, gloves and a balaclava
- Driver, wearing a blue shirt, jeans, a black, red, and white hat, and a red bandana

Drugs
A 38-year-old Guelph man was charged with two counts each of possessing controlled substances for the purpose of trafficking and possessing controlled substances early last Saturday afternoon. Police were investigating a stolen cellphone when they located a man downtown who matched the suspect’s description. He was placed under arrest, and a search revealed quantities of suspected fentanyl and crystal meth as well as prescription opioids, a digital scale, drug packaging and cash.
Fraud
On Wednesday afternoon, the Guelph Police received a call about a possible loss totaling $150,000 to a fraudulent renovation scam. The caller said that they had hired a construction company based out of Woodstock to do renovations on their business space in Guelph. They paid and the company promised to begin the work promptly but after several months of back and forth and no work being done, the caller found that the company they had hired had been dissolved and had been blocked from being able to communicate. Impaired Driving
A 49-year-old Guelph woman was charged with impaired driving and her licence was suspended for 90 days plus her vehicle was impounded for seven days. Late Thursday, police received a report of a possible impaired driver as a witness described the vehicle weaving within its lane and driving into oncoming lanes. Officers attended the owner’s address and found the SUV in the driveway with the lights illuminated and the owner sitting in the driver’s seat. She had more than twice the legal limit of alcohol in her system.
A 36-year-old Guelph woman was charged with impaired driving and novice driver having alcohol in her system Monday afternoon after police conducted a traffic stop at Nottingham and Glasgow. The officer noted a strong odour of alcohol on the driver’s breath, as well as obvious signs of impairment, which was confirmed through a breath test.
A 66-year-old Guelph man was charged with impaired driving on Monday evening after police were patrolling near Woodlawn and Victoria spotted a vehicle being driven erratically, including mounting the curb.
A 42-year-old Guelph man was charged with impaired driving last Saturday afternoon after police were called about an intoxicated man at a children’s baseball tournament on York Road. Witnesses reported the man parked his car nearby and was observed stumbling and walking into another vehicle.
A 24-year-old Kitchener man was charged with impaired driving, speeding, driving without insurance and being a novice driver with alcohol in his system early on Sunday after police stopped a car driving 82 kilometres per hour in a 60 zone on Wellington Street West. The officer noted a strong odour of freshly applied cologne while speaking to the driver, who had glossy bloodshot eyes.
Theft
At approximately 6 pm on Wednesday, five male subjects entered a business at Stone and Scottsdale, where they proceeded to take products off the shelves and placed them in reusable grocery bags. As they were leaving, one customer attempted to stop one of them but a pepper spray-type substance was discharged. A small altercation took place before the man was able to exit to an awaiting white Van. The five male subjects were all described as South Asian and wearing:
- 1) Black baseball hat, Black pants, purple short-sleeve t-shirt, stainless steel bracelet in right hand.
- 2) Black baseball hat with red marks, black backpack, white t-shirt, black pants, and white shoes.
- 3) Red baseball hat, black duffle bag, black t-shirt & black pants, black shoes. Hunchback posture.
- 4) Male 4 – Black baseball hat, black t-shirt & black shorts, black Nike flip flops, long black hair, and black long beard.
- 5) Green bucket hat, trimmed black beard, black and white plaid shirt, black pants, and black shoes.

Just after 12:30 pm on Monday, police were called about a theft which had just occurred at a business near Stone and Scottsdale, walked to the health and beauty aisle and loaded a reusable shopping bag with $2,000 worth product before walking out of the business. He was described as white, early 30s with a slim build. He was wearing a white sweatshirt, black pants, grey Crocs, a white baseball cap with white brim and black shoulder bag and carrying a green reusable shopping bag. Theft (Auto)
On Thursday morning, a Guelph resident reported his white 2016 Lexus IS300 stolen. He had parked the car Tuesday evening in a parking lot near Willow and Dawson and 24 hours later the car was gone. Traffic
At approximately 9 am on August 13, a driver was waiting to turn from Speedvale onto Marksam when his car was struck from behind by a motorcycle causing extensive damage. The motorcyclist left the scene before exchanging information with the other driver. The man was described as white, approximately 20, tall and thin with brown hair and scruffy facial hair. He was wearing a black, green and red full-face helmet and riding a black and green sport bike, possibly a Kawasaki Ninja. A 34-year-old Guelph man received multiple fines, a mandatory license suspension, and vehicle seizure and impound under the Highway Traffic Act on Wednesday afternoon after he was clocked doing 100 kilometres per hour in a 50 zone in the area of Watson Parkway North.
A 35-year-old Guelph man was charged with dangerous driving, driving while prohibited, possessing a controlled substance, possessing a weapon in a motor vehicle and several Highway Traffic Act offences on Monday evening. A police patrol stopped a vehicle speeding through a residential area in the south end, and the driver was discovered to be currently suspended with no insurance on the vehicle. The licence plates on the car were stolen too. During a search incident to arrest, officers located a loaded pellet gun and brass knuckles inside the car, and baggies containing suspected crystal meth.
Other Notes
At approximately 2:30 pm last Saturday, a woman was walking on Woolwich north of Speedvale when a man began yelling crude comments at her. She ignored him and walked to her bus stop, but the man followed her and began touching himself while speaking to her. The man was described as black, late 20s or 30s, 5’6” and clean shaven with short, buzzed hair. He walked with a shuffling gait and was wearing a black hoodie, grey pants and a black backpack. A 37-year-old Guelph woman is charged with mischief under $5,000 and breaching a probation order for an incident Sunday after a suspect was caught on security video tearing two fob readers off the wall and breaking a window at a building near Woolwich and Speedvale causing more than $2,000 in damage.
A 25-year-old Guelph man has been arrested for making sexually explicit material available to a child and criminal harassment after an incident earlier this month. A 15-year-old girl was working when an adult man came in and started asking her about condoms and other products. The girl was uncomfortable with the questions and her father, who works in the same business, intervened to deal with the customer. While the father’s back was turned, the customer turned his phone toward the girl and showed her a photo of an erect penis. He then followed her and attempted to speak to her.
