POLICE NOTES: Basement Flooding, Cosmetic Heist, and Swatting Arrest

There are 145,000 stories in the Royal City, and this is some of them. Looking at a week’s worth of media releases from the Guelph Police Service, there’s a lot going on in our little city crime-wise speaking, so let’s run down some of the charges, issues, and requests for information from the Guelph Police Service over the last seven days.

Assault

A 36-year-old Guelph man was charged with assault, theft under $5,000 and mischief under $5,000 on Wednesday morning at a store downtown. A man entered, went behind the counter to confront an employee, and tried to open a cabinet to remove cigarettes. When the clerk prevented him from doing so the man headbutted him, which lead to a fight. The suspect left after stealing a pack of cigarettes.


A 29-year-old Barrie man was charged with assault causing bodily harm on Wednesday after police were called to a parking lot on Silvercreek Parkway North. A number of parties had met to exchange custody of two children aged eight and five. During the meeting two men began insulting each other before one repeatedly struck the other, causing lacerations to his cheek and head. A Guelph man in his 20s was transported to hospital for treatment of his injuries.


A 58-year-old Guelph man was charged with possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose and three counts of assault with a weapon, and he was also charged with failing to attend court after it was determined he had a warrant for missing a court date last month. Just after noon on Wednesday, three men in their 20s were walking on Speedvale Avenue when they were confronted by an older man, who began yelling obscenities at them while holding a silver knife. The three men ran into Conestoga College while being chased by the suspect.


A 24-year-old Guelph man was charged with aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose and five counts of breaching probation orders on Tuesday evening. A group of people were inside an apartment near Woolwich and Speedvale when an argument broke out between two men who had not met before. The argument became physical and one of the men was stabbed his leg. Investigation revealed the man is on probation with terms including not to attend the address where the assault occurred, not to have contact with a woman who was also present and not to possess weapons.


A 54-year-old Guelph man was charged with assault and uttering threats after a man was walking with his adult daughter on the trail beside Wellington Street East when he was approached by another man, who grabbed and ripped his shirt and threatened to throw him in the river. He also tried to punch the complainant but missed. Police have been called several times about disputes between the two men complaining about each other’s dogs.

Break-Ins

Just before 5 am on Tuesday, police responded to an alarm at a business near Gordon and Clair. Officers arrived to find the glass front door removed from the business and smashed on the ground, as well as a security gate which had been forced open. It was not immediately clear what was stolen. Last Friday morning, a resident near Speedvale and Westmount reported that her shed had been entered overnight. She discovered the screws securing the padlock had been removed. A Stihl chainsaw, Husqvarna hedge trimmer and orange gas can were reported missing. A 39-year-old Guelph woman was charged with break and enter and three counts of breaching a probation order last Friday for a break-in last month to a north-end church.

Theft

At approximately 5:15 pm on Wednesday, the two suspects went into a business near Stone and Scottsdale and used scissors to cut several packages of razors from their display hooks before taking three items from the skincare aisle. A short time later they entered another nearby business, where the woman removed 29 cosmetics items while the male acted as lookout. On The male was described as mid-30s, 5’10” with a muscular build, black hair and a beard and wearing a green button-up shirt, jeans, white sneakers and a black baseball cap, while the female was described as white, mid-30s, 5’5” with a thin build and long dark hair and wearing a black tank top, light-coloured pants or a skirt, white sneakers and a large black purse. Theft (Auto)

On Tuesday, a 20-year-old Guelph man was arrested for taking a motor vehicle without consent, possession of stolen property over $5,000 and driving without a licence. Last month, an officer was conducting patrols near Willow and Dawson when the cruiser’s automated licence plate reader alerted to a stolen Ford F150 in a parking lot. Investigation revealed the truck had been left there about a week earlier. A suspect was captured on security video.

Traffic

A 35-year-old Guelph man was charged with dangerous driving, stunt driving and speeding on Thursday afternoon when a Toyota Corolla travelling westbound on Speedvale Avenue West at more than 100 kilometres per hour swerved to go around another vehicle, but lost control. The vehicle mounted the curb, drove into a ditch and collided with a concrete culvert hard enough to crack it. Emergency responders found a vehicle with extensive damage and the man lying on the ground.


A 39-year-old Guelph man was charged with driving while prohibited, driving without insurance, driving a motor vehicle without licence plates and driving while suspended on Monday morning after police stopped a man riding a scooter through the downtown without licence plates.

Other Notes

A 32-year-old Guelph man has been arrested for mischief over $5,000 and mischief under $5,000 early Tuesday morning after a man broke into a house on the property of a downtown church. He removed plastic tubing creating a hole into the basement and thene placed a garden hose through the hole and turned it on, causing more than an inch of water to pool in the basement before it was discovered. The home’s internet and telephone cables were also cut.


On Tuesday a 25-year-old Guelph man was arrested for two counts of public mischief for a January incident where several emergency calls were made to the police, including one where they claimed that there was a “live shooter” in the building. Then, last month, he called police to report his mother as a supposed impaired driver though she was home at the time. She told police her son was mad at her after being kicked out of her house during a visit.


A 61-year-old Guelph man was charged with causing a disturbance and breaching a probation order on Sunday morning after staff from a business on Quebec Street called about a man who was taking bottles out of a garbage can and throwing them on the road causing them to smash. He was also verbally aggressive towards passersby, causing business staff to lock their doors. He was also seen at the family fountain, yelling and splashing water at people walking by.
