POLICE NOTES: Big Cocaine Bust, Four Vehicle Collision, and Another Crypto Scam

There are 145,000 stories in the Royal City, and this is some of them. Looking at a week’s worth of media releases from the Guelph Police Service, there’s a lot going on in our little city crime-wise speaking, so let’s run down some of the charges, issues, and requests for information from the Guelph Police Service over the last seven days.

Assault

A 15-year-old Guelph girl was charged with two counts of assault and mischief under $5,000 on Tuesday after police were called to Stone Road Mall. Security officers had spotted two young women, and recognized one of them from a vandalism incident earlier in the month. They asked the girls to leave, but one refused and became belligerent, and when they attempted to arrest her for trespassing, she tried to knee one security officer and kicked the other one. No injuries were reported.


A 54-year-old Guelph man was arrested for two counts of assault and breaching a probation order on Monday after spitting on a man in a scooter in the area of St. George’s Square, and then kicking another man and striking him in the head several times.


A 45-year-old Guelph woman was charged with assault and uttering threats last Saturday morning. Police were called to the area of Farquhar and Freshfield where they heard a woman uttering a death threat towards her neighbour and received video footage of the woman pushing the neighbour a short time before.


A 34-year-old Guelph man was charged with two counts of assault with a weapon, assault, mischief under $5,000 and uttering threats to cause damage last Saturday night. Police where called to a home in the Clairfields Drive area where two men were physically fighting outside. One used a shoe and piece of wood to assault the other, and he also damaged property and uttered threats against family members.

Break-Ins

At approximately 4:45 pm on Thursday, police were dispatched to a home near Waverley and Windsor after the homeowner returned home to find a patio door smashed and several areas inside ransacked. Just before midnight on Sunday, police were called to a business near St. George’s Square. The owner came back about 11:30 p.m. to discover a smashed window, and that a laptop, Louis Vuitton satchel and quantity of products had all been stolen. Some of the stolen products were later recovered in the area and returned to the owner. On Monday morning, police were called to a church in the north end after an employee reported that a day earlier a woman entered the church while it was open to the public before forcing her way into the office. The complainant’s purse including her wallet and keys was stolen. The incident was captured on video. Police were able to identify the suspect but have not yet located her. The investigation is ongoing.

Drugs

A 48-year-old Kitchener woman was charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking and possessing proceeds of crime over $5,000 on Tuesday night after a months long investigation by the Drug Enforcement Unit. A woman was arrested while parked in a rental vehicle on Silvercreek Parkway North. Quantities of cocaine, crack cocaine, cash and drug paraphernalia were recovered, and then a search of the woman’s residence uncovered more cocaine, cash and drug packaging.

Fraud

Last month, a Guelph woman received a text from someone claiming to represent an investment company, followed by a message on WhatsApp which included a link to the company’s website. After some initial research on the site the woman made small investments. When those appeared to yield returns, she deposited $2,500 into an online cryptocurrency account and then a day later deposited another $7,000. When she requested to withdraw her funds, a representative told her she must deposit another $25,000 to free up the funds. The woman described the company’s tactics as manipulative and trying to force her to make decisions quickly without time to think. Reminder: Be wary of any telephone call, email or text which requires you to take immediate action, especially when dealing online with someone you don’t know.

Impaired Driving

A 25-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired driving and careless driving early last Saturday after a  two-vehicle collision on Elizabeth Street.


A 28-year-old Waterloo man was charged with impaired driving early Sunday morning after he was found behind the wheel in a live lane of traffic at Victoria and Woodlawn. Police arrived to find him still unconscious, with the vehicle in drive and his foot on the brake.

Theft

Shortly after 6 pm on Sunday a man entered a business on Woodlawn Road West, put $2,000 in tools in a cart along with a large tote that he likely used to hide other property. He exited through a fire exit and met up with a second man, who helped load the stolen items into a black SUV. The suspects were described as south Asian males, one was 25-30 years, six feet, medium build, black hair and wearing a white t-shirt, jeans, a blue cap and white sneakers with blue and red Nike logo; and the other was 30 years, 5’10,” thin build, black hair and wearing jeans, a red shirt and black shoes. At approximately 7:20 pm last Friday police were called to the area of York and Victoria where a Bell Canada technician had been called due to a power-related issue and discovered a gate to the fenced compound had been forced open and pulled from its hinges. Batteries and other equipment with a total value of more than $7,000 were stolen. It is believed the theft occurred at approximately 5 pm based on when the power issue was detected. At approximately 5:40 pm on Sunday police were called to a business on Silvercreek Parkway North where a man had entered the store and selected a watch from a display. He appeared to hide the watch in his waistband before entering a washroom and when he exited he lifted his shirt to reveal a black-handled knife to the employee as he left the store. The man was described as white in his mid-30s, 5’11” with a thin build. He was wearing a black baseball jersey with red and white writing, jeans, green and white shoes, a black baseball cap and black balaclava. A 43-year-old Guelph man is charged with theft under $5,000, two counts of possessing stolen property under $5,000 and two counts of breaching a probation order after taking a package from the front porch of a home near Willow and Applewood. The package contained a heart monitor meant for a child at the home.

Traffic

At approximately 5:15 pm last Saturday, a woman was crossing Gordon Street at Fountain when she was struck by a car. The driver stopped and asked if she was okay and then left the scene. The vehicle was described as a blue sedan. The driver was a white man in his late 20s with short hair. The woman went to the hospital on her own for treatment of minor injuries. A 50-year-old Guelph man was charged with driving while suspended n Thursday morning after a cruiser’s automated licence plate reader alerted her to a vehicle driving with improper plates. The owner of the car was also charged with allowing it to be operated without insurance and with improper plates.


A 34-year-old Guelph man was charged with dangerous driving and failing as a G1 licence holder to be accompanied by another licensed driver on Monday after a four-vehicle collision that sent one person to hospital and caused more than $150,000 in damage.  The driver of an SUV lost control while making a turn at Laird and Southgat , leaving the road and driving over the grass before reentering the roadway and colliding with two other SUVs and the trailer of a transport truck.

Other Notes

A 70-year-old Guelph man was charged with two counts of improper storage of a firearm, and his 25-year-old son was charged with possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, possessing an unloaded firearm with ammunition and possessing a firearm without a licence. The charges were laid after police were dispatched to a home in the Exhibition Park area Thursday afternoon to check the wellbeing of a resident after concerning social media posts were reported.


A 20-year-old Guelph man was arrested and charged with possession of child pornography and make child pornography available on Thursday after members of the Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) Unit, in collaboration with the Technological Crimes Unit and uniform patrol officers, executed a search warrant at a residence in the north end. Investigators located several devices related to the investigation which were seized for further analysis.


A 32-year-old Guelph man is charged with obstructing police Wednesday evening after police were called about a shoplifting incident at a business on Silvercreek Parkway North. While en route to the call, an officer spotted a man who closely matched the suspect’s description. He was detained and asked his name, providing two different variations of a fake name before an officer recognized him from previous interactions.


On Monday a 34-year-old Guelph man turned himself in to police and he was charged with committing an indecent act and two counts of breaching a probation order. The charges stem from an incident in the west end at the end of June where a man exposed himself to his neighbour.  The suspect is currently on probation for previous indecent act convictions.
