POLICE NOTES: High Risk Offender Nabbed, Deep Fakes and Law Office Break-In

There are 145,000 stories in the Royal City, and this is some of them. Looking at a week’s worth of media releases from the Guelph Police Service, there’s a lot going on in our little city crime-wise speaking, so let’s run down some of the charges, issues, and requests for information from the Guelph Police Service over the last seven days.

High Risk Offender

Medhani Yohans, 36, a high-risk offender who was released from custody on Thursday, was located and arrested by police on Friday. He was charged with the four counts of breach of probation, disobey court order, and criminal harassment.

Assault

A 33-year-old Guelph man was arrested on Monday for break and enter, two counts of assault with a weapon, and failure to comply with a police undertaking. That morning, a man entered a residence near Paisley and Yorkshire, broke down the door to the bedroom, hit the victim in the head with a frying pan, and then stuck “Nerf toy” in his face.


A 35-year-old Guelph woman charged with assault on Monday morning, after trying to steal from a purse on a downtown patio and then assaulting a store employee when they tried to escort the suspect off the property.


A 30-year-old man was arrested, and charged with robbery, assault, theft under $5,000, and two counts of breaching his probation after were called downtown Saturday afternoon where a man began yelling at a woman who was known to him. He tried to take her backpack, resulting in her falling to the ground and being dragged and when two witnesses attempted to assist, one was punched in the face and the other had their backpack stolen.

Break-Ins

Police are investigating a break and enter at a local law office on Woolwich Street early Thursday morning. A Milwaukee tool bag containing various tools, three laptop computers, and a black folder with a red stripe were all taken. The suspect is described as a white male, approximately age 40; clean-shaven, taller height, average build wearing a grey baseball cap with black sunglasses resting on top plus a long-sleeve blue Fox Racing jersey with white logo and stripes, and beige shorts and blue/black running shoes. On Wednesday, police were contacted after a homeowner near Silvercreek Parkway North discovered that the upper unit of their semi-detached rental property had been entered sometime earlier in the week. The only reported item missing from the property was a Lorex 4K security camera and the investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information related to this incident is asked to contact the police at 519-824-1212.


The Break Enter Auto Theft (BEAT) Unit arrested two people after executing a search warrant at a residence on Vanier Drive. The two suspects, a 40-year-old woman, were charged with break and enter, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, possession of an identity document, and possession of break-in instruments. The male suspect was also charged with failing to comply with a probation order and trespass by night. Police recovered stolen property connected to multiple incidents across the city.


A man was arrested for break and enter on Sunday after getting caught on home surveillance at a residence in the area of Eramosa and Victoria.

Fraud

Guelph Police alert people about the increasing use of deepfakes in scams. Fraudsters are creating highly realistic deepfake videos impersonating trusted public figures—including politicians, celebrities, and news anchors—to promote fraudulent investment opportunities, merchandise, or applications. These manipulated videos are often shared on social media platforms and can be very convincing, making it challenging for the public to detect their illegitimacy. Before following up on any offer be skeptical of videos featuring public figures promoting investments or merchandise, be wary of videos that are too good to be true or show people acting out of character, and cross-check claims by consulting trusted and official sources.

Impaired Driving

A 55-year-old Guelph man was charged with operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration last Saturday morning after a police cruiser was struck by another car attempting to exit its spot downtown.

Theft

A 27-year-old man was charged with committing an indecent act and theft under $5,000 on Thursday evening after staff at a north-end pharmacy reported that a man had allegedly exposed himself, and then tried to steal a beverage before leaving  the store. The suspect was previously issued a trespass notice and was not permitted to be on the premises.

Theft (Auto)

A29-year-old man was arresteed on Wednesday for possession of stolen property over $5,000, theft of a motor vehicle, two counts of beach of probation, and six counts of operation while prohibited after a 2023 Audi Q3 was stolen from the driveway of a residence on Ferris Circle. The suspect was also wanted for several charges including communicating for the purpose of obtaining sexual services under 18, criminal harassment, indecent telephone calls, invitation to sexual touching, and luring a person under 16 by means of telecommunication

Other Notes

An 80-year-old Guelph man was arrested and charged with possession of child pornography, and accessing child pornography after the Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) Unit, in collaboration with the Technological Crimes Unit and Uniform Patrol Officers, executed a search warrant at a residence in the west end of Guelph.
