POLICE NOTES: Big Drug Bust, Tire Heist, and Assault Overreaction

There are 145,000 stories in the Royal City, and this is some of them. Looking at a week’s worth of media releases from the Guelph Police Service, there’s a lot going on in our little city crime-wise speaking, so let’s run down some of the charges, issues, and requests for information from the Guelph Police Service over the last seven days.

Assault

A 54-year-old Guelph man was arrested for assault after a woman in her 60s was punched in the head Thursday during a dispute between her neighbour and another man.


A 30-year-old Guelph man was located downtown and arrested for assault, mischief under $5,000 and breach of probation after an incident Sunday night. A shouting match over whether one man was talking the picture of another man resulted in the victim’s phone being smash and thrown in a sewer grate. The victim was then punched on the bridge of the nose, causing him to lose consciousness. The suspect was already wanted on a warrant for fraudulent use of a credit card.


A 40-year-old Cambridge man is charged with assault for an incident near the loading zone of a business on Arrow Road where a man was slapped in the face by another many he did not know.

Break-Ins

On Monday a resident of Glasgow Street South called police to report she had arrived home after being away all weekend and discovered the house had been entered. Items in the basement had been moved around and a set of keys that had been in the basement were found in the backyard. It is not believed anything was taken. On Monday, a resident of the Old University neighbourhood called to report that between midnight and 6 am Monday someone entered his pickup in the driveway. Milwaukee batteries and a backpack containing 30 to 40 hand tools were stolen, all valued at approximately $1,300. The complainant later reported that he believed some of the tools had been listed for sale online. Drugs

Four men and three women from Guelph and Cambridge face dozens of charges including possession for the purpose of trafficking, possessing prohibited weapons and possessing stolen property after a months’ long investigation. Three search warrants were executed earlier this month and police seized approximately $28,000 worth of fentanyl, cocaine, methamphetamine and Oxycodone was seized, as well as two firearms and other weapons including prohibited knives, brass knuckles, bear spray and a conducted energy weapon. Officers also recovered $5,800 in cash and approximately $20,000 worth of suspected stolen property including tools, bicycles and home appliances.


A 35-year-old Guelph man was charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking after the Drug Enforcement Unit executed a search warrant for a home in the area of Woolwich and Marilyn Wednesday morning. During the investigation, officers recovered approximately $2,200 worth of cocaine, three imitation firearms, $1,500 in cash and drug packaging paraphernalia.

Fraud

On Tuesday, a woman in her 20s attended the Guelph Police station to report that she had been contacted in April by someone claiming to represent the Canada Revenue Agency. The caller claimed that the woman owed taxes to the Chinese government, and after being transferred around a couple of times, she was advised that she would be deported back to China, but a bail order could be issued if she sent them $142,000, which she did via wire transfer; she later sent another $51,000. Residents should be very wary of any telephone call or other communication from anyone claiming to represent a government official or law enforcement, especially those requiring them to take immediate action such as providing personal information or sending payment.


On Tuesday morning a Guelph man reported he was selling an iPhone online and was contacted by a potential buyer. The pair agreed on a price of $1,100 and met on Monday at 8:50 pm in the lobby of the seller’s apartment building. After returning to his unit, the victim discovered each of the 11 $100 bills had the same serial number. He tried to send a message to the buyer but his profile had been deleted. He was described as a brown male, 19 years old, 5’6” with a medium build and tattoos on both arms. He was wearing a black t-shirt, grey pants and Crocs.

Impaired Driving

A 29-year-old Guelph man was charged with impaired driving as well as driving while suspended after police were called regarding a possible impaired driver in the parking lot of a south-end apartment building. This is the second time in a month that the same man was charged with impaired driving. His licence was suspended again for 90 days and his vehicle – a rental – was impounded for seven days.


A 59-year-old Guelph woman was charged with impaired operation and possessing a controlled substance, and a 58-year-old Guelph woman is charged with possessing a controlled substance on Thursday morning after police were called to the rear of a Woodlawn Road West business to check on two women in a running car. The women appeared to be impaired, and officers located a large quantity of prescription opioids and other medications as well as full and empty needles and other paraphernalia.


A 32-year-old Guelph man was charged with impaired driving and driving without insurance on Wednesday afternoon after a white Lincoln Navigator mounted the curb on Speedvale Avenue East and struck a hydro pole at Delhi Street. The driver reversed and tried to leave the scene.


A 29-year-old Guelph man was charged with impaired driving and speeding on Tuesday evening while travelling 74 kilometres per hour in a posted 50 zone.

Theft

At approximately 11:20 am on Thursday, a black Cannondale All Road e-bike was stolen while locked outside the Zehrs at Kortright and Edinburgh. The lock was also stolen. The bike has baskets on the front and rear and two pannier bags on the rear. It is valued at $3,000. At approximately 11:50 pm on Sunday, police were called to an address near Woolwich and Tiffany after the homeowner’s son saw movement outside and observed a man removing a bicycle from their detached garage. He went outside to confront the man, who dropped the bicycle and ran away. The suspect was described as white and wearing a light-coloured long-sleeve shirt, dark pants, a bandana face covering, baseball cap and backpack. Police are also investigating two other recent incidents in the Exhibition Park area in which sheds have been entered and bicycles targeted. In one occurrence, reported Monday morning, a shed was entered after the lock was cut off and two Trek bicycles valued at $800 each were stolen. It is not known if the incidents are related.


At 9:30 pm on Tuesday, three men entered a business near Eramosa and Stevenson and tried to steal several bottles of perfume. Staff intercepted them as they left and were able to recover about half of the items. All three were described as being in their mid-20s. Two were Middle Eastern with black hair and one was black with black hair. All were wearing grey ‘Essential’ sweaters. Last Friday afternoon, an employee of a south-end business called to report that earlier in the week an individual claiming to represent a legitimate trucking company picked up a trailer loaded with nearly 400 new Pirelli tires. The theft was discovered when the load did not arrive in Winnipeg as expected. A 36-year-old Guelph man was charged with theft under $5,000 and mischief under $5,000 early Sunday after an employee of a downtown establishment saw a man smash a car window and remove some baseball equipment. The victim and others chased the suspect a short distance and detained him on the ground for police, who arrived moments later.

Theft (Auto)

On Sunday morning a resident near Downey and Teal reported that her white 2025 Lincoln Navigator had been stolen sometime between midnight and 6:30 am. The vehicle is brand new with no distinguishing features except personalized licence plates. Just before 6:30 am on Sunday, a resident near College and Scottsdale heard a loud bang and observed a white car had struck a concrete bicycle barrier. Officers arrived and found the heavily-damaged Mazda 3 in a nearby parking lot. The car had been reported stolen on July 8 and had different stolen plates attached. A 27-year-old Guelph man was charged with possessing stolen property over $5,000 and breaching a probation order on Wednesday morning after reports of a suspicious male walking around the neighbourhood checking car doors near Stevenson and Emma. He was seen in a silver Toyota Corolla, which was reported stolen outside Guelph.
