POLICE NOTES: Jays Jerseys Jacked, More Tundras Taken, and Busted by Facebook

There are 145,000 stories in the Royal City, and this is some of them. Looking at a week’s worth of media releases from the Guelph Police Service, there’s a lot going on in our little city crime-wise speaking, so let’s run down some of the charges, issues, and requests for information from the Guelph Police Service over the last seven days.

Assault

On Thursday, a 38-year-old Hamilton man was arrested by members of the Guelph Police Service Human Trafficking/Intimate Partner Violence unit and charged with luring a person under 16, sexual assault, sexual interference and criminal harassment. The arrest was made after a 13-year-old Guelph girl met the man through Snapchat in February and they began communicating regularly. He began pressuring her for an intimate relationship despite knowing her age and later came to Guelph. He picked up the girl and another young female and while the three were in a grassy area the man touched the 13-year-old inappropriately.


A 43-year-old Guelph man was arrested for assault with a weapon after a man in his 60s reported that he was confronted near St. George’s Square by a man not known to him on Wednesday morning. The man threw a lit cigarette which burned holes in the victim’s shorts and the cushion of his wheelchair. The victim was not physically injured.


A 31-year-old Guelph man was arrested for two counts of assault after he became verbally aggressive when he was asked to leave a bus in Guelph Central Statiton. During the altercation he spat in the driver’s face and pulled a supervisor by the lanyard around her neck. Neither were physically injured.


A 36-year-old Cambridge man was arrested for robbery, assault and being unlawfully in a dwelling for a July 2024 home invasion-style robbery where a Guelph man and his teenage son were both assaulted.


A 54-year-old Guelph man was charged with assault and assault causing bodily harm last weekend after police attended a west-end apartment building regarding an earlier incident. Two men were arguing in the hallway when a third neighbour intervened. He was shoved and stumbled backwards into his wife, who fell to the floor landing on her elbow and banging her head. A woman in her 70s was transported to hospital and treated for a fractured arm.

Break-Ins

At approximately 10 pm on Wednesday, a security guard noticed someone on camera inside the construction site at Gosling Gardens and Poppy Drive, but they were gone when security arrived. A fence had been cut to gain access, GPS sensors on an excavator had been disassembled and removed, as well as a GPS screen from inside the vehicle’s cab. Just before 3 am on Tuesday, police were notified of a break and enter at a business on Arrow Road by two males in a white cargo van. An officer spotted the van but the driver swerved around the cruiser on the grass embankment and fled at a high rate of speed. It was followed a short distance before the pursuit was called off. The van driver was described as a brown male wearing a black t-shirt, dark pants, gloves and a medical mask. The second male was described as brown and wearing a beige and white plaid shirt, jeans, black gloves and a medical mask. A large number of electrical components and smoke alarms were stolen. Last Friday evening, police were called to a home near Woodlawn and Nicklin where the owners had come home from vacation and discovered the house had been entered through a basement window. A video game system and accessories and a laptop computer were among the items stolen. On Monday a 36-year-old Guelph man was arrested by police in another jurisdiction and charged with break and enter for a June 2022 break-in at the a business in the Clairfields East subdivision. The Centre of Forensic Science was able to make a match to someone in the national DNA Data Bank.

Drugs

A 42-year-old Guelph woman was charged with possessing a controlled substance while going through security screening at the Provincial Court on Wyndham Street South. She removed an unlabeled pill bottle and placed it in the bin with the rest of her items, and officers found it contained a small amount of crystal methamphetamine.

Fraud

A Guelph resident lost $16,000 to a telephone scam after receiving a phone call from someone claiming to work for RBC. The calling advised the victim that their credit cards had been compromised and that they would be sending an agent out to collect the compromised cards. Two days later a brown man – approximately 5’7″, 30s, medium build, with a beard and moustache – attended to the complainant’s house, and collected his credit cards, which were then used at several businesses around the city. Impaired Driving

An 18-year-old Guelph man was charged with impaired driving, careless driving, stunt driving and having alcohol in his system as a novice driver last Friday night after a meet up of what the police press release calls “a group of car enthusiasts” at a parking lot on Stone Road. A man began aggressively revving his Honda Civic before shifting it into Drive, causing him to lose control and sideswipe another vehicle. He ended up having more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system.

Theft

Early Friday morning, a Guelph man reported that he was walking the bike in the area of Speedvale and Stevenson when he was attacked and repeatedly assaulted by unknown individuals who took the bicycle. The stolen bicycle was described as a black Diamondback Voyageurs with red writing. On Thursday morning, a resident near West Acres and Elmira Road South reported that someone entered his work truck parked in front of his house overnight between midnight and 4 am even though the truck is equipped with a lockable cap over the bed. At approximately 1:30 pm on Wednesday, a man entered a business on Stone Road West, took five Blue Jays jerseys off the shelf, and exited the business while making no attempts to pay for the items. The supect is described as a white male, approximately 5’10”, wearing a blue suit with a white shirt underneath and black shoes and having red hair and beard. Theft (Auto)

On Tuesday morning, a resident near Edinburgh and Stone reported that his white 2014 Mazda 3 had been stolen overnight. It was last seen at 6 pm on Monday. If you have any information call Sergeant Chris Probst at 519-824-1212, ext. 7342, or email cprobst [at] guelphpolice.ca.


At approximately 1:30 am on Tuesday, police were called to a business on Clair Road East where a Guelph man and a friend went into the store, and left the keys in a 2012 Audi A4, which was then taken. Shortly after 4 am the car was located just outside Guelph with damage to the windshield and driver’s side. Last Friday morning, police were called to an address near Eastview and Summit Ridge where a white 2024 Lexus SUV was stolen from the driveway at 3:39 am. Then, at 4:15 am on Saturday, police were called to an address on Harvard Road after the homeowner reported their black 2024 Toyota Tacoma had just been stolen from the driveway. Both vehicles were tracked to locations outside of town, but they were not found. At 8 am on Saturday, a resident near Edinburgh and Terraview reported an attempted theft of his 2024 Toyota Highlander, but the thief was not able to steal the truck, which had a kill switch installed. It is not known if any of the incidents are related.

Other Notes

A 27-year-old Guelph man was arrested on scene for arson and mischief over $5,000 after several items were put in a sink and set on fire in a residential unit in the area of Woolwich and Marilyn in Thursday morning. The Guelph Fire Department was able to extinguish the fire but the unit itself sustained considerable damage and it was deemed uninhabitable.


On Monday afternoon, an 18-year-old Guelph man was arrested for failing to comply with an undertaking after he posted a picture of himself on Facebook with something that looked like a handgun tucked into his waistband. It turned out to be a BB gun, but the man was currently on a release order with a condition not to possess weapons.


A 43-year-old Guelph man was charged with committing an indecent act last Friday afternoon after police were called to an address in the north end. A female resident said she was sitting outside when another resident sat down close to her and began to masturbate while staring at her. Officers located the male inside with his pants down and arrested him.
