POLICE NOTES: Seeking Witness and Suspicious Taxi, But Serial Masturbater is Caught

There are 145,000 stories in the Royal City, and this is some of them. Looking at a week’s worth of media releases from the Guelph Police Service, there’s a lot going on in our little city crime-wise speaking, so let’s run down some of the charges, issues, and requests for information from the Guelph Police Service over the last seven days.

Assault

At approximately 1:45 am on Friday, police were dispatched to Macdonell Street, where a man in his 20s was reportedly being assaulted. He said three men were harassing his female friend and when he intervened they turned on him, repeatedly punching and kicking him. They reportedly left in a black pick-up. On Wednesday evening a 40-year-old Brampton man was arrested in another jurisdiction for dangerous driving, assault with a weapon and flight from police for an incident Monday where police responded to a possible theft on Woodlawn Road West. An officer arrived and found two of the men sitting in a black Mercedes, using his cruiser to block the car in. The officer approached and asked the driver to hand him the keys. The driver held the keys towards the officer, but when he reached for them the driver suddenly reversed, momentarily dragging the officer who was not seriously injured. A 26-year-old Caledon man was also arrested for the crime and charged with possessing a controlled substance, possessing stolen property, obstructing police and failing to comply with a bail order.


A 27-year-old Guelph man was arrested for assault with a weapon on Tuesday morning for an incident last Friday night outside a business on Speedvale Avenue West. A Milton man and the suspect got into a starring contest, and while one got into his car, the other went into his house and came out with a baseball bat, raised it over his head and charged at the vehicle. The victim was able to leave the scene.

Break-Ins

On Thursday a 41-year-old Guelph man was arrested and charged with break and enter, two counts of mischief, possessing a controlled substance and three counts of breaching court orders for a April 18 attempted break-in at a local supportive housing development, which was followed by another attempted break-in Sunday. The total damage in both incidents is more than $1,200. Arresting officers located a small amount of suspected fentanyl on the suspect.

Drugs

Nothing to report.

Fraud

Last Friday afternoon, a 17-year-old man was driving his father’s vehicle near Gordon and Stone. When he approached a red light, his foot slipped off the brake and he bumped the car in front of him. The other driver got out of his car and yelled at the teen about “internal damage”, and when the teen asked if they could resolve the matter without involving police, the man said that he would not report it if the teen sent him $1,000, which he did. On Monday, the teen’s mother contacted police after learning what had happened. The other driver was contacted and agreed to send back the money. No charges were laid. The man’s vehicle was observed to be in poor condition with no damage related to the minor collision.

Impaired Driving

A 50-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired driving, refusing to provide a breath sample and dangerous driving after a witness called police about observing a hit and run collision involving a parked vehicle downtown last Friday night. Officers located the car turning into an address on Willow Road and pulled it over. The driver had a strong odour of alcohol on his breath, but he repeatedly refused to provide a breath sample.


A 42-year-old Guelph man was charged with impaired driving, obstructing police and two counts of breaching a probation order last Saturday afternoon after reports of an impaired driver on Conroy Crescent. The man was detained after refusing to comply with the officer’s direction. He was placed in the cruiser, but attempted several times to get out before the officer was finally able to close the door.

Theft

An armed robbery at a bank near Gordon and Clair on June 7 is still under investigation. The suspect is described as a black male with dark skin, mid- to late-20s, 6’ and wearing a white or grey sweater, black pants, a pink silk mask and a black hat. Anyone with information or who has dashcam or other video of Brock Road/Gordon Street from Highway 401 to Clair Road that morning between 8-9 am is asked to email the Major Case Unit at mcu [at] guelphpolice.ca.


Just before 6 pm on Monday, a man and woman entered the west-end LCBO and were observed placing several bottles in their backpacks and inside their clothing before walking out. Seven bottles of alcohol with a value of $450 were stolen. The suspects were described as:

  1. White female, 50 to 60, 5’4”, small build, blonde hair, blue eyes, wearing a blue Bench hoodie, black pants and a Tampa Bay Lightning hat
  2. White male, 50 to 60, 5’9”, medium build, greying brown hair, blue and black spring jacket, grey t-shirt, black pants, Colorado Avalanche hat

Theft (Auto)

Just before 6 pm on Tuesday, an officer was patrolling near Paisley and Edinburgh when the cruiser’s automated licence plate reader alerted him to a stolen vehicle going the other way. Ten minutes later, the Toyota Scion was located parked on a nearby street and a short time later two men approached the car, which drive off at a high rate of speed when the officer approach. He was not pursued in the interest of public safety, however the officer was able to identify the driver based on previous involvement. The investigation is ongoing.


Just before 2 am on Thursday, emergency services were called to a business on Southgate Drive after an employee of an adjacent business heard a noise and discovered a burning van. Investigation revealed the van had been stolen from Hamilton on June 14. The white 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander that was stolen on April 10 from a driveway in the east end was recently located at the Port of Montreal with a fake vehicle identification number attached. The investigation is ongoing.

Traffic

On Friday, a 20-year-old Guelph man was arrested for dangerous driving, flight from police, stunt driving and Highway Traffic Act charges. This was the same suspect who was driving erratically on a motorcycle with no licence plate in the area of Stone and Edinburgh wearing a “come get me” t-shirt. (See below.)


A 64-year-old Guelph man was arrested for driving while prohibited last Friday evening after an officer patrolling near the LCBO on Clair Road East conducted a traffic stop of a driver who seemed to be trying to avoid detection. the officer noted an empty beer can behind the driver’s seat and detected an odour of alcohol on his breath. A roadside breath test resulted in an alert and the driver’s licence was suspended for seven day, and that the driver was also prohibited from driving as a result of a Criminal Code conviction.

Other Notes

Police would like to speak to a man regarding an ongoing investigation and are asking the public’s help to identify him. At approximately 10:10 p.m. last November 5, there was a male who was in the area where an incident had occurred, and he was last seen leaving that area in a dark-coloured Ram pickup. He had a tattoo on his arm which might be helpful in identifying him. Just after 4 pm last Friday, police were called to an address near Paisley and Stephanie. An 11-year-old boy said he and his younger sister were walking home from school when a black taxi stopped beside them and the driver said hello. The children ignored him and the taxi drove away, but then made a U-turn and came back and parked near them. The boy reported the car stopped in front of their house until they got inside. The car was described as a black sedan with a white taxi sign on the roof and white lettering on the sides. The driver was a male in his 40s with a medium build, grey or white hair and black and grey clothing. A passenger in the rear seat was described as a white male, early 30s with a slim build and dirty blonde hair. On Wednesday afternoon, a 29-year-old Guelph man was arrested for committing an indecent act, trespassing at night, three counts of mischief to property and six counts of breaching a probation order after a series of encounters were the suspect entered the property of  downtown area home, dropped his pants and pleasured himself.
