Fraud
Police are raising awareness of several recent reports of residents being pressured into contracting home repairs which they possibly do not need. Most commonly, older residents have reported being approached by supposed representatives of a roofing company and told there are issues with their roof or chimney. The residents are told the repairs are required urgently and are pressured to authorize the work. In one case, a woman in the Old University area reported she paid a company $3,500 cash as a deposit for roof work, and was then told it would cost another $14,000 to fix the chimney. The $3,500 deposit was not returned.
Residents are urged to be very cautious when hiring companies for home repairs, especially if receiving an unsolicited offer or asked to pay the full cost in advance. So…
- Be suspicious of any unsolicited offers or claims from unknown individuals
- Obtain at least three quotes from reputable companies before entering a contract.
- Check online reviews, licenses and Better Business Bureau ratings before hiring any contractor. Also consider asking for references.
- Take your time to read and understand any contract before signing, and never feel pressured to make an immediate decision. Speak to family members or a trusted friend to see if they express any concerns.
- Consult with your insurance company about coverage and ensure the contractor is working in compliance with your policy.
